Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Italian desire to win, started with the ambition to host the 1934 World Cup. How many FIFA Congresses were held (to decide the venue) before Italy became the chosen land?

Answer: 8

In a strange twist, the Italians even agreed to host (and run) the tournament at a loss, if necessary. However, the tournament didn't have any major financial trouble thanks to Mussolini's patronage.
2. South America was poorly represented in the 1934 World Cup. Only Brazil and Argentina took part in the Cup. Even then, Argentina didn't send their full strength squad, due to fears of poaching by top Italian clubs. Which Argentinean player switched sides (to Italy) before the 1930 World Cup finals?

Answer: Orsi

Raimondo Orsi was a left winger who was lured by Team Juventus. Ironically after the 1930 World Cup got over, the Argentinean captain Luisito Monti ("The Man Who Strolls"), was also picked by the Italians. Both these players played for Italy in the 1934 World Cup.
3. Austria was expected to post a formidable challenge to the Italians. Called popularly as the 'Wunderteam', they were coached by a highly respected figure in the soccer world. Who was it?

Answer: Hugo Meisl

In a warm up match held at Turin the previous February, the Austrians had actually beaten the Italians 4-2. Sindelar ("The Man of Paper"), and Smistik were the star players for the 1934 Austrian World Cup team.
4. In the first round of Knock-Out matches, Italy played against U.S.A. Italy won the match by a comfortable 7-1. Schiavio scored a hat-trick in this match. In which round of matches (at the 1934 World Cup) did he score his next goal?

Answer: Final

He scored the winning goal for Italy in the Final. The only goal for the Americans was scored by Donelli, who incidentally, was the only non-Italian player who stayed back after the finals to play for an Italian club.
5. There were three leading goal-scorers in this tournament. Who amongst the following, was NOT one of them?

Answer: Dr. Georges Sarosi (Hungary)

In a unique similarity, Conen (just like Schiavio) scored a hat-trick in the first round match (against the Belgians), and then scored another goal in the match for third place (Germany's last match of the 1934 World Cup). Nejedly (Czechoslovakia), scored in all the rounds of the World Cup except the Final.
6. Brazil lost their first round match against Spain 1-3. Which player, who later became the mentor of Pele, missed a penalty for the Brazilians in this match?

Answer: De Brito

The goals were scored by Iraragorri (Penalty) and Langara (2) for Spain, while Silva scored the lone goal for the Brazilians. All the goals came in the first half itself.
7. Poor refereeing was helping the Italian cause a lot. One of the worst displays of the referee, came in the Italy-Spain second round rematch. How many Spanish goals were disallowed by the Swiss referee?

Answer: 2

Déjà vu... The referee Mercet was later suspended by his own association for his inept ability. Italy won the match by the solitary goal (It was 1-1 in the first match).
8. Who was the referee for the 1934 FIFA World Cup final with Italy?

Answer: Eklind

Eklind was from Sweden. Langenus was the referee of the 1930 World Cup. Langenus was quite critical of the 1934 World Cup; he called it the 'greatest Sporting Fiasco ever', in respect to the Italian 'tactics'.
9. In the final match; after 82 minutes, the Czechs were leading 1-0. Who then came up with a brilliant fluke goal to level things up?

Answer: Orsi

Another similarity was the almost identical nature of Orsi's goal in the final and Noack's goal in the semi-final (both against the Czech's goalkeeper Planicka). It is said Orsi spent the next day (after the World Cup final), trying to hit a similar goal on an empty goal post. None of them went in. Anyway, he scored when it mattered the most, and soon the match was into extra time, where Schiavio's goal won the Cup for the Italians
10. Who won the 1934 FIFA World Cup?

Answer: Italy

The Italians (Led by Combi) won (by hook or by crook), and they were to retain their title four years later at France.
