Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what planet does the story take place?

Answer: Thulcandra (Earth)

In the first part of the trilogy, Elwin Ransom was kidnapped and transported to Malacandra, known to men as Mars. In the second he found himself on Perelandra, or Venus. The story of "That Hideous Strength" takes place on Earth... but becomes every bit as unworldly as its predecessors.
2. The sinister "N.I.C.E." plans world domination - for what does N.I.C.E. stand?

Answer: National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments

The N.I.C.E. is - seemingly - under the direction of Lord Feverstone, familiar to readers of the first parts of the trilogy as Dick Devine, friend and devotee of Dr. Edward Weston, who met his fiery end in "Perelandra".
3. Who is the "front man" for the N.I.C.E., the public face hiding its true agenda?

Answer: Horace Jules

A famous novelist, Jules presents a far different image of the N.I.C.E. to a skeptical British public than its true purpose would!
4. Who is buried under Bragdon Wood?

Answer: Merlin Ambrosius

The Wizard Merlin has remained buried, but not dead, beneath the well in the enchanted Bragdon Wood for 1,500 years, and it is through him that the N.I.C.E. plans to harness and overcome the forces of Nature, thus transforming men into Gods.
5. What is Jane Studdock's "gift"?

Answer: She can "see" events happening even though she isn't present

Jane "sees" things happening in her dreams - at the same time they happen. This talent comes in handy as the Logres (the group who have set themselves up in opposition to the N.I.C.E.) begin to take action against the Institute.
6. Who, in reality, is the tramp brought to Belbury by members of the N.I.C.E?

Answer: Just a tramp

Unfortunately for the Institute, the real Merlin makes his way to St. Anne's to join the Logres, and the tramp who so excites the N.I.C.E. is... just a tramp. "Fisher-King" is another name for Ransom himself, the "Pendragon" (leader) of Logres.
7. On whom did C.S. Lewis base the central character of the trilogy, Dr. Elwin Ransom?

Answer: J.R.R. Tolkien

Lewis and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien were close for many years, and Lewis paid homage to his friend by giving his protagonist Ransom many of Tolkien's own personal traits. The 12th century scholar Bernardus Silvestris first made mention of the "Oyarses", spirits which Lewis transformed into the "Oyeresu" or planetary angels of his trilogy. Haldane and Stapledon, two well-known writers of the 1920s, had written stories of the triumph of science over religion, which offended Lewis's Christian sensibilities - and it was their works which Lewis intended to refute with his own unique take on the sci-fi genre.
8. Which of the "Oyeresu" - angels of deep space - arrives first at St. Anne's?

Answer: Viritrilbia (Mercury)

The Wizard takes into his body the powers of the angels who again, as in the earlier books of the trilogy, appear in the forms of the Ancient Roman deities for whom men named them.
9. After the destruction of Belbury, Ransom is "taken" once more by the Oyeresu, but this time, he won't return. Where does he go?

Answer: Perelandra

Ransom is taken back to Venus, which he had already saved from the domination of the Bent Oyarsa, Lewis's representation of Satan. There, he will be healed of the bite he received from the Un-Man - the possessed Dr. Weston - which had threatened to kill him.
10. As with the other two parts of the trilogy, "That Hideous Strength" was written as a retelling of a particular Biblical story. Which one was it in this case?

Answer: Tower of Babel

The N.I.C.E. wants to make the concept of God obsolete by making mankind's power over nature - and himself - supreme. But, in the end, its leaders are thwarted by the eldils, who make their speech unintelligible to each other... just as God did to the builders of the Tower of Babel.
