Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For whom does Pierre Gringoire write the morality play in Book I-'The Play?'

Answer: Madame Margaret of Flanders

Gringoire's first play is written in honor of the marriage of the Dauphin of Paris and Margaret Flanders.
2. Esmeralda saves Gringoire from being hanged in the Court of Miracles by offering to marry him. Clopin throws down a pot and it breaks into four pieces- what does this symbolize?

Answer: The number of years for which they will be married

Yes, it means they must be married for four years. I'm sure Gringoire was hoping for a little longer than that. Unfortunately, a marriage of four years wasn't necessary.
3. Book III is dedicated solely to what?

Answer: Notre Dame

Notre Dame was Hugo's inspiration for writing this novel. It seems only fitting that he should dedicate an entire book to it. The first chapter of Book III is titled 'Notre Dame' and quotes in relation to the damages done to the cathedral, "Time is blind, but man is stupid." The second chapter is called 'A Bird's Eye View of Paris.'
4. What is Esmeralda originally sentenced to death for?

Answer: Phoebus's murder

Claude Frollo originally stabs Phoebus, but Esmeralda is found on the scene. Phoebus does not die, but the Court does not know that, nor do they care, when they try her. She confesses to it when they begin to torture her, even though it's not true.
5. What does Esmeralda teach Djali to spell out with block letters?

Answer: Phoebus

Fleur-de-Lys, Phoebus's fiance, and her friends, see Esmeralda dancing and wish for her to come entertain them. Phoebus calls her over, and she comes, of course. When she comes, the girls are jealous of her beauty and end up making fun of her. They find the little bag around Djali's neck, and when emptied, the goat immediately arranges the letters to spell "Phoebus."
6. After Quasimodo rescues Esmeralda from being hanged, she resides in Notre Dame. He watches her and presents her with a symbolic gift. What does he give her?

Answer: Two vases, each with flowers

He leaves two vases for her. One is crystal, one is made of earthenware. The crystal one has a crack in it, which drains the water, and causes the flower to die. The clay one, though not as lovely, is whole, and the flowers inside are beautiful and healthy. Esmeralda takes the crystal vase inside and wears the dead flower in her hair for the rest of the day.
7. Does Phoebus love Esmeralda?

Answer: No

He lusts after her, but her undying love for him is inarguably unrequited.
8. What is the key to finding Esmeralda's parents?

Answer: The green bag around her neck

Inside the green bag is a little pink shoe, exactly like the one Gudule in the Rat-Hole stares at day and night. It is when Esmeralda pulls the shoe out of the bag that she is reunited with her mother. She believes that staying a virgin will somehow enable the shoe to help her find her parents, but she is willing to give this up for Phoebus.
9. What is the English name of Quasimodo's favorite bell?

Answer: Marie

"Thus Quasimodo had fifteen bells in his harem; but Big Marie was his favourite."
10. Who is the 'Spectre Monk?'

Answer: Claude Frollo

When Phoebus is found stabbed, the innkeeper reported seeing a 'Spectre Monk' that came in with the Captain.
11. What is the code that the vagrants use to okay the attack on Notre Dame?

Answer: "The chive in the cly"

Gringoire explains this to Frollo when they are preparing to go up into the cathedral and save Esmeralda.
12. Who does Gringoire save?

Answer: Djali

Frollo makes Gringoire promise to let him have Esmeralda, and, even though she once saved his life, he feels he has done enough in saving her, and runs away with the goat, Djali.
13. Besides Gringoire, who turns vagrant?

Answer: Jehan

Jehan's life is in no danger, he is just suited best for a vagrant's life.
14. In essence, whom does Quasimodo marry?

Answer: Esmeralda

After watching Esmeralda being hanged, and throwing Frollo off of Notre Dame, Quasimodo retreats to Esmeralda's grave and dies holding her rotting body in his arms. "When an attempt was made to loose him from the skeleton which he clasped, he crumbled into dust."
15. What was the original title of the novel?

Answer: Notre Dame de Paris

Translated exactly, it means "Our Lady of Paris." Given the Cathedral's presence in the novel, it is a very fitting title.
