Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Asher Lev, a Hasidic Jew, lives in the Ladover area of Brooklyn with his mother and father. What gift does he discover he possesses early in life?

Answer: Drawing

This should have been an easy one. From the age of five, Asher discovers that he loves to draw. At times it seems he cannot even control his urges to draw, much to the dismay of his father.
2. Asher's father is a very important man in the Ladover community. What is his name?

Answer: Aryeh

Aryeh Lev works for the Rebbe of the community, frequently travelling to other countries to help Jews. Because "My Name is Asher Lev" takes place during the fall of Stalin in Russia, Aryeh Lev travels often to Russia to help misplaced Russian Jews. Asher feels abandoned by his father when he is younger.
3. One of the major conflicts in young Asher's life is the Rebbe's decision to have his family move where?

Answer: Vienna

Asher cannot bear to move away from the home that is filled with artistic inspiration to him, and finally breaks down and tells the Mashpia that this is the reason he has been acting out. Aryeh Lev moves to Vienna alone, leaving Rivkeh and Asher behind.
4. When he is 13, the Rebbe arranges for Asher to begin studying painting with what famous artist?

Answer: Jacob Kahn

Kahn, an old Jewish man who has lost his faith during WWII, tries to convince Asher not to study art, as it doesn't mesh with Judaism. Asher is determined and Kahn sees quickly how talented the boy is.
5. What does Asher paint while in Europe that eventually leads him to both international fame and banishment from his community?

Answer: A crucifixion

Painting a crucifixion is the only way that Asher knows to portray his parents' pain. Unfortunately, his parents cannot forgive him for this, and he is forced to live in Europe with little contact from them for many years.
6. In the beginning of "The Gift of Asher Lev," Asher is married and has children.

Answer: True

Asher is married to a French woman named Devorah, and has a daughter, Rocheleh and a son, Avrumel.
7. Whose death forces Asher and his family back to the US?

Answer: His Uncle, Yitzchok

When his Uncle Yitzchok dies, Asher plans on returning to the US just for the Jewish week of mourning, but in the end his family wants to stay much longer.
8. Asher is surprised to find out that his Uncle Yitzchok left him what in his will?

Answer: An art collection

Asher had no idea that his uncle collected rare art, and spends a lot of time with the collection before the will is read, which states that the collection is to go to him, much to the dismay of his cousins.
9. Asher faces two major dilemmas in the "The Gift of Asher Lev". The first is his conflict with his family, who want to stay in Brooklyn while he wishes to return to France. What is the main reason Asher doesn't want to stay in Brooklyn?

Answer: He feels he cannot paint in Brooklyn

Although Asher enjoys his new found relationship with his parents and the Rebbe, he doesn't feel inspired in Brooklyn, as he once was. He knows that he will never be inspired to create the controversal art he must if he remains so near his parents and the Rebbe.
10. It takes reading the entire novel to finally understand it, but what do we at least learn the "gift" of Asher Lev really is?

Answer: His son, Avrumel

When it all comes down to it, Avrumel is the gift. He must allow his son (and wife and daughter) to remain in the US so that Avrumel can become the protege to the aging Rebbe, who has no children. After all the strife that his community has given him for his artistic gift, Asher still gives something back to them.
