Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the musical, Christine only has to choose between Raoul and the Phantom. What does she have to choose between in the book?

Answer: Whether to turn the grasshopper or the scorpion

This happens when the Phantom has kidnapped Christine. At this time Raoul and the Persian, in an attempt to save her, have been trapped in a torture chamber. If Christine turned the grasshopper she would be free and could marry Raoul. However, if she did turn the grasshopper, the opera house, (and much of the surrounding city of Paris) would be blown up. If she turned the scorpion, it would kill Raoul and she would have to marry the Phantom, but the opera house would be spared.
2. In the musical, when Christine has to choose, she chooses Raoul, and the Phantom relents and lets them go. But what does Christine choose to do in the book, and what are the consequences?

Answer: She turns the scorpion, but the Phantom lets her leave with Raoul anyway

When she turns the scorpion, she realises too late that this choice will kill Raoul, so she pleads with the Phantom to let him go. The Phantom changes his mind and lets Christine, Raoul and the Persian leave, alive.
3. Which of these characters from the book is in the musical?

Answer: Madame Giry

Philippe is the Count de Chagny, and Raoul's older brother. The Persian is a friend of the Phantom who helps guide Raoul to his underground lair to save Christine. Little Jammes is one of the dancers at the opera house and one of the first in the book to see the Phantom. Madame Giry is in both versions, but plays two very different characters; in the book she is the cleaner and is also the Phantom's messenger, in the musical she is the ballet instructor, but she keeps the role of the Phantom's messenger.
4. In the musical the Phantom is never called by his real name. What does the book say his name is?

Answer: Erik

Erik was the Phantom's name. Gaston is the writer's name and Philippe is Raoul's brother.
5. One of the most famous scenes from the musical is the chandelier crash which is (depending on the version) after "Past the Point of No Return" or after the performance of "Il Muto". Is there a chandelier crash in the book?

Answer: Yes

Although it does not happen in the same place as it happens in the musical, it does happen. It occurs after Carlotta loses her voice while she is singing in the production of "Faust". The chandelier lands in the audience, not on the stage, as it does in the musical.

It kills one person, the woman who was to replace Madame Giry as the cleaner of box 5, and causes injury to several others.
6. In the musical (the movie version) the Phantom puts something in Carlotta's throat spray to make her lose her voice; how does she lose her voice in the book?

Answer: He uses ventriloquism

Later in the book he shows Christine how he can put his voice anywhere around the room, without needing to move.
7. In the musical (the movie version) only one side of the Phantom's face is damaged, with the other side being relatively normal. What does his face look like in the book?

Answer: His whole face is deformed

The book says that his eyes and nose are barely visible, his skin is stretched so tightly over his face that it looks like a skull, and that his skin is yellow.
8. Which of these characters from the musical had their names changed from what they were in the book?

Answer: Andre and Lefevre

Andre was originally called Armand. Lefevre was originally two characters called Poligny and Debienne.
9. In the musical, at the very end, Raoul almost gets hanged. What happens instead of this in the book?

Answer: He almost burns to death and later almost drowns

When Raoul and the Persian are in the torture chamber, Raoul almost burns to death in the intense heat. Later when Christine chooses to turn the scorpion, he almost drowns when the chamber he and the Persian are in floods; however, Christine and the Persian come to his aid. Christine begs for his life to be spared and the Persian tells the Phantom who he is, hoping the Phantom will remember him.
10. In the musical, the Phantom's fate is relatively unknown as he smashes a few mirrors and leaves the opera house, before he can be caught by the mob following him. What is the Phantom's fate in the book?

Answer: He dies shortly after Christine leaves with Raoul

He asks Christine to return when she hears he has died, and to bury him in secrecy, burying with him the ring he had given her. Later, when she heard he has died, she returned and did as he asked. The writer tells us this is how he knows the skeleton that he found was Erik's, because the body had the ring.
