Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chronologically, this is the first book in the series.

Answer: Sharpe's Tiger

This trilogy is the lead-in to the series, while Sharpe was still in India. The India trilogy also includes "Sharpe's Triumph" and "Sharpe's Fortress". We also meet the evil Sgt. Hakeswell.
2. Sharpe is promoted to Ensign in this novel.

Answer: Sharpe's Triumph

He saves Wellington's life and begins his rise from the ranks into an officer. When he is transfered to the Rifles, the rank is Lieutenant, which is equal to an Ensign. He finally attains the rank of Colonel.
3. In "Sharpe's Trafalgar", Sharpe was aboard the HMS Pucelle and which other ship?

Answer: HMS Calliope

This is the only novel that takes place at sea. The other ships are from the Hornblower series. He is on his way to join the 95th Rifles in England. This was a huge defeat for Napoleon.
4. How many women bore Sharpe at least one child?

Answer: 3

They were: Lady Grace Hale (who, along with the child, died in childbirth), Teresa Moreno and Lucille Castineau.
5. Sharpe and Harper meet Napoleon in this novel.

Answer: Sharpe's Devil

Most of the series has Sharpe fighting in the British forces that are facing Napoleon. Through Flanders, Portugal, Spain and even to the final battle at Waterloo, they never meet Napoleon. When they were on their way to Chile, they stopped at St. Helena.
6. Sharpe was called in front of a court martial in three separate books. Which is not one of the three?

Answer: Sharpe's Havoc

In "Tiger", he received 200 lashes for striking Hakeswell. In "Revenge" he was accused of stealing money from the French and had to help recover it to prove his innocence. And in "Honour", he was accused of murdering a Spanish officer. He also meets Lucille in "Revenge".
7. In addition to Sgt. Harper, Captain Fredrickson was also a close friend of Sharpe. What was his nickname?

Answer: Sweet William

Sweet William lost an eye, had his jaw damaged and his hair burned in a battle. William was his first name. He became a close friend and supporter of Sharpe.
8. In "Sharpe's Company", he is demoted from captain to lieutenant. Why?

Answer: Clerical error

This novel also had the return of Sgt. Hakeswell. Sharpe does end up regaining his captaincy. The clerk had filed the gazette for his captaincy under a different R. Sharpe, who had died, so there was no action on it. By the time Sharpe had pointed out the error, another captain had arrived to lead the company.
9. In "Sharpe's Enemy", he is promoted to major. What is unusual about this novel?

Answer: The action is completely fictional

Out of Cornwell's Sharpe novels, even though the main characters are fictional, the majority of the battles and settings are historically accurate except for this one and "Sharpe's Seige". Here, Cornwell creates a conflict with deserters that never happened.
10. Which of the following men would not be considered an enemy of Sharpe?

Answer: Major Hogan

Major Hogan was considered a mentor and was also in charge of Wellington's intelligence corps. Hogan dies in "Sharpe's Siege". Ducos was the French spy, Hakeswell the evil sergeant and Simmerson the hateful colonel.
