After Titanic had left Queenstown, the Captain comes to bridge and says to First Officer William Murdoch that he has to put the telegraph on full ahead. Murdoch walks to the wheelhouse and says to Sixth Officer James Moody: "All ahead full!". "Very good, sir!" was the young officer's answer. Captain Edward John Smith (played by Bernard Hill) joined the White Star Line in 1880 and remained with the company for the rest of his life. Popular with his crews as well as his passengers, Smith was widely regarded as a charming, personable officer.

He became the captain of choice for many of the rich and powerful in the transatlantic set, earning the nickname "the millionaire's captain". Through most of his long career, he had never been involved, as he recounted in 1907, "in an accident of any sort worth speaking about. I never saw a wreck and have never been wrecked, nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in disaster of any sort." White Star had made it virtually a tradition to have Smith in command on the maiden voyages of its important ships.

Caledon Hockley (played by Billy Zane) was the 30-year-old scion of a wealthy Pittsburgh steel family. Handsome, self-confident, rich beyond meaning, he aspired to sophistication and insisted on propriety.

He found in Rose DeWitt Bukater a suitable young woman to fill the role of wife in his aristocratic future, and he presented her to his peers with the pride of ownership, basking in others' reaction to her beauty and her pedigree.

Murdoch lowers the first boat on the starboard side at about 12:45am. It's filled with 28 people aboard. Standard Lifeboat 7 has a capacity of 65! In the movie, we can see that there are problems with the lowering of the lifeboats. One side of the boat is not lowered for a few seconds, so the boat hangs diagonally. First Officer William Murdoch (played by Ewan Stewart) is portrayed as a coward, who in one scene accepted a cash bribe to ensure a male passenger room on a lifeboat.

He is shown flung into the crowd of fleeing passengers and finally turning the revolver on himself.

This is a totally inaccurate and unfair description of events and depicts William Murdoch as a weak and corrupt officer. James Cameron took many liberty's in his assumptions of British Officers.

The Merchant Navy Officers considered themselves to be part of a great British maritime tradition. Indeed many were Royal Naval Reserve Officers. Despite Mr. Cameron taking liberty's in twisting stories and documented history, Titanic, the movie, stands as a wonderful work of fiction with some mind blowingly beautiful sets.

When Captain Smith and Thomas Andrews are talking about the damage of the ship, Mr. Ismay thinks there's no problem at all. They've just struck an iceberg, but who cares? All he wants is to start the engines again, even with water in her bow. But when Thomas Andrews comes to the conclusion that the ship will sink we hear Mr. Ismay saying: "But this ship can't sink!" But Andrews knows that all ships can sink, even the "unsinkable" Titanic. J. Bruce Ismay (played by Jonathan Hyde) was the 50-year-old Managing Director of White Star Line.

He was one of the most powerful men in the shipping industry. Son of Thomas H. Ismay, who founded the line in 1869, Joseph Bruce Ismay had ascended to the management of the company with his brothers by the turn of the century.

In 1902, the American financier J. Pierpont Morgan, who was buying shipping companies for his enormous International Mercantile Marine (IMM) trust, negotiated the purchase of White Star Line. J. Bruce Ismay alone of his family remained with the company.

In 1907, in response to the competition posed by rival Cunard Line's new mammoth liners Lusitania and Mauretania, Ismay conceived of a trio of even larger, grander and more luxuriant ships that would re-assert White Star's dominance of the lucrative and prestigious transatlantic trade. Ruth and the Countess of Rothes are drinking tea and are talking about the purpose of a university, when suddenly Mrs. Brown comes to their table. "Hello girls, I was hoping I'd catch you at tea." Because Molly is "new money" Ruth says: "We're awfully sorry, you missed it.

The Countess and I were just off to take the air on the boat deck." Molly replies with this stunning quote. Mrs. Margaret "Molly" Brown (played by Kathy Bates) was the wife of a Colorado mining millionaire. Intelligent though self-taught -- she spoke several languages -- she was a plain-spoken woman without background in high society, who was generally shunned by the socialites of Denver.

When Titanic was sinking, she was evacuated in Lifeboat #6, under the command of Quartermaster Hichens. Having been at the wheel of Titanic when she struck the iceberg, Hichens was completely unnerved and directed the boat away from the sinking ship as fast as possible.

He was terrified that they would be swamped by the suction as the ship went down, or overwhelmed by swimmers desperate to be saved. Mrs. Brown and several more women wanted to return to help save others, but they were overruled by Hichens' bullying and by the frightened silence of the majority of the lifeboat's passengers.

As Hichens' fears became less and less rational, Mrs. Brown effectively took over command of the boat and persuaded the women to help with the rowing. Her heroism and selflessness during the disaster was much talked about afterwards and earned her the moniker "The Unsinkable Molly Brown".

Answer: Second Officer Lightoller

Rose and Jack are waiting for a boat (probably Lifeboat 2 or Collapsible D) with Tommy and Fabrizio. Second Officer Lightoller allows only women and children into the boats and even shoots with his gun in the air. Rose knows that Jack can't join her in the boat and doesn't want to leave him until Cal shows up.

He convinces Rose that Jack will be saved and she finally boards the lifeboat. But in the boat she realizes that Cal could be lying and she jumps off the lifeboat. Second Officer Charles Lightoller (played by Jonathan Phillips) was very much the popular image of a steamship officer. Tall, sun-bronzed, handsome, and with a deep, pleasant speaking voice. Lightoller was a good officer and an outstanding seaman (Daniel Allen Butler, "Unsinkable" The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, page 46). Lightoller's image was tarnished somewhat in the movie with Jonny Phillips playing Lightoller as a "strutting martinet" who was extremely arrogant.

Answer: Spicer Lovejoy

Spicer Lovejoy (Cal's valet) had to keep an eye on Jack in the master-at-arms office. After a while, Jack sees the water coming up in the window. Lovejoy is about to leave, but first he gives Jack a smack in his stomach with the "compliments of Mr. Caledon Hockley". Spicer Lovejoy (played by David Warner) was valet and bodyguard to Caledon Hockley. An ex-Pinkerton with a background in railroad security, his job was to keep Cal out of trouble and protect the family name.

In the course of his duties, he was ready to use whatever means necessary, including the threat of physical force, to prevent anyone from interfering with his employer.

In his 35-year career, David Warner has worked with some of the leading directors in film, including John Frankenheimer, Sidney Lumet, Richard Donner, Joseph Losey, Alain Resnais, Terry Gilliam and, on three occasions, Sam Peckinpah.

Fabrizio had the chance of taking a look outside. There he could see that most of the boats were lowered. When he meets Jack he tells him that the boats are all gone. Jack knows that they have to hurry and he tries to find an exit with Rose, Fabrizio and Tommy. Fabrizio De Rossi (played by Danny Nucci) was a young Italian, about 20, with dreams of finding success and happiness in America.

A good friend of Jack Dawson's, he was playing poker in a Southampton pub on the morning of April 10, 1912, with Jack and two brothers from Sweden.

In this scene we can see Fifth Officer Lowe in Lifeboat 14, trying to prevent the passengers of getting in the boat. While the boat was being lowered, Lowe even shoots three times in the air. Harold Lowe (played by Ioan Gruffudd) was just 28 years old when he became Fifth Officer onboard RMS Titanic.

The Maiden Voyage of the Great Liner was also the young Welshman's first crossing of the Atlantic. At the time of the collision with the iceberg, Lowe was asleep in his quarters. Upon hearing voices he dressed and made his way to the bridge where the news of the incident was discovered. Later, as he worked the davits on Lifeboat No.5, he was approached by a gentleman who proceeded to chant "Lower away, lower away!", Lowe instantly stood and screamed at the man "If you'll get the hell out of the way, I'll be able to do something!, you want me to lower away quickly? You'll have me drown the lot of them!" To this, and without a word, the male slowly walked forward to Lifeboat No.3. Unknown to Officer Lowe, the gentleman who he so hastily scolded, was none other than Mr. Bruce Ismay, President of the White Star Line.

It was Lowe who returned to the area where Titanic sank to look for survivors (the only boat to do so) where upon 4 men were plucked from the wreckage. In the movie, Rose is also rescued by Officer Lowe (she blew the whistle a lot of times).

Answer: Benjamin Guggenheim

When Guggenheim is offered a lifebelt, but he refuses it. He would rather go down in his best clothes than in a silly lifebelt. Benjamin Guggenheim (played by Michael Ensign) was a well known millionaire industrialist, father of three, and notorious playboy. Travelling with his latest mistress, the French singer Leontine Aubart (played by Fannie Brett), Guggenheim, 47 at the time, was the epitome of a first class passenger. Often spending months abroad while managing various investments, Guggenheim lived an unbelievably lavish lifestyle. Most of his money had come from his iron baron father, Meyer Guggenheim. Benjamin never showed the monetary prowse that had made such a giant out of his father.

He squandered over 8 million dollars on bad investments, and left his three children with only $450,000 each. (not exactly small change in 1912, but a tiny fraction of the original fortune) As the ship sank, he and his valet returned their lifebelts to a steward and retired to Guggenheim's luxurious cabin, where they donned formal evening attire. Reportedly, after seeing to the safe departure of his mistress and her maid in a lifeboat, Guggenheim and his valet sat in chairs on the tilting deck, sipping brandy and smoking cigars as the ship sank.

Answer: Second Officer Lightoller

When the boats are swung out, Lightoller walks to the Captain to ask if they could start with the loading of the lifeboats. Captain Smith, who is clearly touched, answers with "Women and children first, yes." Lightoller follows this rule with almost no exceptions (he did allow one male passenger in a boat, because it was poorly manned). Jonny Phillips (who plays Second Officer Lightoller) is a very talented actor who was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

He created an unforgetable character in Titanic.

However, there was one moment when it seemed that perhaps he brought too much of his theatre background into the part. When he asked the passengers to step towards him, his theatrically outstretched arms made it seem as though he was working the ship deck like a stage.

Captain Smith, Andrews and Ismay come into the bridge with a map of Titanic. There is water in 5 compartments. The ship can stay afloat with 4 compartments breached, but not five. Smith asks if the pumps will help, but Andrews knows that they could only extend time with minutes. From that moment they could do no more. That's when he said: "Titanic will founder". Thomas Andrews (played by Victor Garber), then aged 39, was the Managing Director of Harland & Wolff Shipyards, nephew of Lord Pirrie (Harland & Wolff's chairman), and one of Titanic's main designers.

A tireless workaholic, he had supervised every detail of the ship's construction and outfitting, and was the world's foremost expert on every aspect of her. He sailed on Titanic with a hand-picked team of seven experts, the Harland & Wolff "guarantee group", who spent most of the voyage trouble-shooting last-minute problems and perfecting the finishing of this, the company's greatest creation. Andrews himself brought along Titanic's complete blue-prints, and worked practically non-stop on the voyage, carrying a notebook everywhere, making notes about imperfections and ideas for improvements.

When Jack and Fabrizio are on the poopdeck, they meet Tommy Ryan (played by Jason Barry), an Irish man. Jack is drawing a man with his daughter, when Tommy asks this. But Jack doesn't answer, because he sees Rose (for the first time).
Jason Barry was born on April 10, 1975 and is engaged to Nicola Henderson. He's sometimes credited as Jason Barry Raine. He appeared in the movies "O Mary This Londen", "Circle of Friends", "Snitch", "Monument Ave", ... In the movie, Tommy Ryan is shot by First Officer Murdoch. There is no evidence at all that an officer fired at a person.

Answer: Sixth Officer Moody

When the iceberg is sighted by lookout Frederick Fleet, he telephoned the bridge with the message "Iceberg, right ahead!" Sixth Officer James Moody reported to First Officer William Murdoch the same message. Murdoch cried to the helmsman "Hard to starboard!" and then he ran the engines full astern.

After this, he kept looking at the iceberg, hoping that the ship will turn in time. In the crow's nest, lookout Fleet is also worried: "Why aren't they turning?" At the bridge, Murdoch asks "Is it hard over?", Moody answers with "It is, yes, sir, hard over!" Within a few seconds the ship struck the iceberg on the starboard side. Sixth Officer James Moody (played by Edward Fletcher) was born in England on the 21st August 1887.

In 1911, at the age of 23, he joined the White Star Line and was assigned to the giddy splendour of Oceanic II. Among Oceanic II's officers at that time were a certain Charles Lightoller and David Blair, and together with James Moody, the three men would all soon be receiving telegrams from the White Star Line informing them of their new posting, aboard the largest liner in the world: Titanic. James Moody received a telegram from the White Star Line informing him to report to the company's Liverpool offices on the morning of March 26th, 1912, from where he would travel to Harland & Wolff's yard at Belfast, where Titanic was in the last stages of her fitting-out.

The day of her sea trials, April 1st, was also fast approaching. Accompanying Moody on the trip to Belfast were Titanic's other three junior officers, Herbert Pitman, Joseph Boxhall and Harold Lowe. On the night of April 14th, Moody was on duty on the bridge, together with First Officer William Murdoch. At just before 11.40pm, the chilling sound of the lookout's bell being rung three times could be heard on the bridge, and only a second or two later, the telephone on the bridge started to ring. Moody was by now an experienced seaman, and he knew instinctively that the three bells meant danger, and when he answered the telephone, he didn't bother exchanging pleasantries with Frederick Fleet, the lookout who had first spotted the iceberg. "What do you see?" asked Moody. "Iceberg right ahead!" answered Fleet in the crow's nest. "Thank you" said Moody, and replaced the telephone, and almost at the same time, he repeated Fleet's warning to First Officer Murdoch. Not long before 1.30pm, Fifth Officer Lowe and Sixth Officer Moody had a quick conversation, the eventual outcome of which was the difference between life and death. Lowe pointed-out to Moody that he'd sent a handful of lifeboats away into the night without a single officer aboard them, and suggested that it would be advisable to have an officer in the next boat they loaded, No.14. Moody sealed his own fate when he heroically told Lowe to board the lifeboat, and that he would find one later. But he never found one and died in the sinking.
