Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the most common place to find ticks?

Answer: In the woods

They are often found in tall grass or shrubs. Be sure to check yourself and your dog for ticks after a ramble through the woods.
2. What are the two major groups of ticks?

Answer: Hard and soft

Hard ticks (Ixodidae) have a shield called a scutum. It covers the entire body in the male but is smaller in the female. Soft ticks (Argasidae) don't have this shield. Most of the ticks that bite humans are hard ticks. Some soft ticks also attack humans and can transmit disease.
3. Ticks have a special structure in their mouths that allows them to latch on firmly to a host. What is it called?

Answer: Hypostome

The hypostome is a barbed rod that the tick pushes into its host. It serves both as an anchor and a feeding tube.
4. What is the main way for ticks to detect a potential host?

Answer: Carbon dioxide from the host's breath

Although ticks can detect vibrations and some other smells, most use carbon dioxide emissions as the main indicator.
5. Some species of ticks live for many years and can go for months between meals.

Answer: True

Hard ticks have to find their hosts in a predatory fashion called "questing". Depending on the species, they may live one, two or three years, until they mate, lay their eggs (up to 10,000) and die. Soft ticks usually live in close proximity with their host. They generally feed for about 1 hour at a time. They lay small clutches of 20-50 eggs several times throughout their lives.
6. How can you keep ticks away from your yard?

Answer: All of these

Keeping rodents and deer away from your property also helps to control ticks.
7. How can you reduce the risk of a tick bite?

Answer: All of these

Ticks don't jump or fly, so by avoiding overgrown trails and other areas where they like to hang out you have a better chance to avoid being bitten. If you do go into the underbrush, the other measures help protect you. Your local public health unit can give you more information.
8. Lyme disease is transmitted from deer to humans via a tick.

Answer: False

Although deer are the main host for ticks, they don't carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. The main carriers are mice and some other rodents. Blacklegged ticks feed on a variety of organisms during different stages of their life. As nymphs and larvae they feed on smaller animals; as adults they seek out larger mammals.
9. It is well known that some ticks can carry Lyme disease. Which is another tick-borne illness?

Answer: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Its name comes from the characteristic rash that develops about 3-5 days after the onset of fever and flu-like symptoms.
Valley Fever is caused by a fungus; the other two are transmitted by mosquitoes.
10. Sometimes in spite of all precautions you may find yourself the unwilling host of a tick. How should you remove a tick from your skin?

Answer: Using tweezers, grasp the tick close to your skin and pull straight up

This is the best way to make sure you remove the whole tick. Twisting it can cause the head and mouth to break off, putting you at risk for a skin infection. You don't want to squeeze the tick's abdomen as this can push infectious material under your skin. Trying to burn or suffocate it likely won't work. If you can't remove the tick yourself, call your doctor.

After removing a tick, be sure to disinfect the bite area and wash your hands well. Check with your doctor or public health unit if they want you to bring the tick in for testing.
