Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the second edition of Total Hockey's Adjusted Scoring system, which of these players had the greatest single-season offensive output?

Answer: Howie Morenz, 1927-28

I really hope you didn't choose Gretzky, way too obvious. Though the Adjusted Scoring system has its share of problems, it is far better than using raw stats.
2. In the 2001 edition of "The Hockey Compendium", save percentage data is given for many seasons from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which have never been seen before. Who compiled this data?

Answer: Edward Yuen

Yuen did every season from the mid-50s to the mid-60s, and a few in the 70s. Let's just hope he does some more, and lets us know about it.
3. Who was the 2002 president of the Society for International Hockey Research (SIHR), and was responsible for many of the stats seen in "Total Hockey" ?

Answer: Ernie Fitzsimmons

Fitsell was the founder of SIHR, James is a baseball statistician, and Diamond was the editor of "Total Hockey".
4. Which of the following is the most significant weakness of the plus-minus stat?

Answer: it is affected by a player's teammates

Plus-minus is significantly affected by the team the player plays for. Players on good teams will have good figures, while players on bad teams will have bad figures. This can be compensated for by, among other things, normalizing a player's plus-minus to the expected value based on his team.
5. Who pioneered the use of Pythagorean analysis in hockey stats?

Answer: Marc Foster

Pythagorean analysis was invented by Bill James for use in baseball stats. It refers to the fact that a team's winning percentage bears a close quadratic relationship to runs scored and runs allowed. Marc Foster did the work to introduce this to hockey, and has expanded on it, using it to calculate individual Pythagorean percentages, based on the plus-minus factors.
6. Which player, leading a major league in assists, was the first to more than double the assist-per-game average of the runner-up?

Answer: Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, 1914-15

Taylor, playing for Vancouver of the PHCA, had 2.12 as many assists per game then his teammate and runner-up Mickey MacKay. Keats exactly doubled the runner-up's average playing for Edmonton of the WCHL in 1921-22.
7. A player leading the NHL in face-off percentage will usually have a faceoff winning percentage in the range of what?

Answer: 60-65%

The 2001-02 leader was Montreal's Yanic Perreault, with a 61.3% faceoff winning percentage.
8. Of these standard stats, which is most reflective of a goalie's actual skill?

Answer: save percentage

Wins and losses are very dependent on team. GAA is also, because the number of shots a goalie faces is dependent on team. Shutouts are completely meaningless; why do we not also record the number of 1-goal-against games, or 3-goals-against games?
9. Which of the following facts does NOT help explain why you cannot directly compare scoring stats from 1998 to scoring stats from 1908?

Answer: the quality of hockey is higher in 1998

There is simply no way to demonstrate that the quality of hockey is higher now than it used to be; therefore it cannot be a "fact".
10. Who were the first players in the NHL to record single-season plus-minus marks of +120 or more?

Answer: Bobby Orr and Larry Robinson

Orr had a season of +124, Robinson had one of +120. Gretzky never even broke +100.
11. In most fantasy hockey systems, a player gets more points for a power-play goal (PPG) than an even-strength goal (ESG). Usually it's one point for an ESG, two for a PPG. Which of the following is NOT a reason that this treatment is not logical?

Answer: all of these are reasons

These are all valid reasons. In terms of the score, a goal is a goal is a goal. Giving extra credit for a goal that is easier to score makes no sense. Finally, not treating assists in the same way is inconsistent; if PPGs are worth more, why are PPAs not?
12. In one stat category, the single-season record holder exceeds the #2 spot by a factor of 1.28. That is, if the #2 spot is 100, the #1 is 128. Which stat is this?

Answer: shots on goal

Phil Esposito set the shots record at 550. Number 2 is Paul Kariya at 429. 550 is 1.28 times 429. For assists, the figure is 1.21; for goals 1.06; for PIM 1.17. These were all in the 20th century.
13. Detailed statistics for the 1927-28 NHL season, which included unofficial tallies of shots by skaters and against goaltenders, and ice time numbers, were printed in what newspaper?

Answer: New York Times

These stats were a wonderful find a few years ago. Aurel Joliat took the most shots in the league; Alec Connell led in save percentage. Top defencemen like Buck Boucher, Eddie Shore and Lionel Hitchman played over 50 minutes per game.
14. Which of the following best describes the invalid assumption upon which Klein and Reif's Goaltender Perseverance Index is based?

Answer: as a goalie's shots against increase, his save percentage decreases

They never even attempted to prove that this is true, they simply ascribe it to common sense. It is in fact not true.
15. The Disciplined Aggression Proxy (DAP) is a new stat beginning to gain acceptance. It is defined as a player's hits plus takeways, divided by PIM. It is designed to reflect the degree of aggressiveness a player has, without going overboard and taking penalties. Who invented the DAP?

Answer: Iain Fyffe

He also invented this quiz. Is it bad to talk about yourself in the third person?
