Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, the Dutch team had their best finish in history, moving from 14th place at the 1999 Worlds to 5th. At those 2001 Worlds, one of their gymnasts medaled on the uneven bars. Which gymnast?

Answer: Renske Endel

Endel became the first Dutch gymnast to win an individual World Championships medal in the modern history of the sport.
2. Who was the first woman to perform consecutive release moves on the uneven bars?

Answer: Natalia Yurchenko

She accomplished this feat with a Tkatchev-Deltchev combination at the 1983 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
3. Which of these dismounts is named after Nadia Comaneci?

Answer: underswing half twist to back tuck or pike

The underswing half twist to back tuck or pike is the Comaneci dismount. A clear hip circle to back tuck is a Mukhina, a forward flyaway 3/2 twist is called a Perchstein, and a flyaway double tuck with a full twist during first salto is called a Moro.
4. The trend in the sport has been moving more and more towards importing skills from the men's high bar and adapting them to the uneven bars. The one-armed giant is one such skill. Which Chinese gymnast became the first female gymnast to compete this move?

Answer: Liu Xuan

Liu is perhaps best known as the Olympic Champion on balance beam from the 2000 Olympic Games, but she is known to many gymnastics fans as "The Queen of the One-Armed Giant." She actually added a release move to this skill, and in the Code of Points, a one-armed Gienger is listed as the Liu.
5. What is another name for an L-grip?

Answer: eagle grip

6. Which Chinese gymnast became the first woman to perform a Gaylord I salto on the uneven bars?

Answer: Mo Huilan

Another skill borrowed from men's high bar, on uneven bars it is now listed in the Code of Points as the Mo salto. Her teammate Bi Wenjing also performed the skill, but Mo was the first to do it.
7. Going into the 2002 World Championships, Svetlana Khorkina had won the uneven bars at every Olympics, Worlds and European Championships since 1994. However, at this competition, she was dethroned. Who took the title that year?

Answer: Courtney Kupets

The title was hers, and she gave it away. Khorkina led going into the finals, but fell twice (once on a move that she had invented), thus handing the title to American Courtney Kupets. Kupets became the first American to win a World Championships title on any event since Shannon Miller in 1994. Romania's Oana Petrovschi took the silver, Russian Lyudmila Yezhova grabbed bronze, and Great Britain's Beth Tweddle surprised everyone by finishing a close fourth.
8. Chinese gymnasts certainly aren't the only ones who import skills from the men's high bar to the uneven bars. Which gymnast brought the Markelov to the uneven bars?

Answer: Svetlana Khorkina

A Markelov is called a Khorkina on the uneven bars, named after Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina (she has several skills named after her on this apparatus). A Markelov is a front giant 1/2 turn to straddle flight backward to hang.
9. Which of these countries was accused of falsifying age records for their top gymnast at the time, the 1991 world champion on the uneven bars?

Answer: North Korea

In the 1991 World Championships, Kim Gwang-Suk took the title on bars with a perfect score of 10.0, her first and only world medal. Kim actually has two skills named after her on the uneven bars. The first is a giant with 1 1/2 turn after handstand to an L or mixed-L grip and the second is a release move: a swing forward on the high bar to a counter salto forward that is straddled to regrasp the high bar.

However, Kim's age was always suspect - many television commentators noted that Kim looked far too young to be in her teens and that she even some front teeth missing (although the official explanation for this was that she had been in an uneven bar accident). Accused of falsifying Kim's age so that she would be old enough to compete on the senior level, the North Korean women's team was banned from the 1993 Worlds. Officials caught onto the scam when it was noted that Kim had been listed as fifteen years old for three years in a row.
10. The tucked double twisting double back (known as the double-double) dismount off uneven bars bears the name of which Russian gymnast?

Answer: Oksana Fabrichnova

Oksana was one of Russia's top juniors in the early 1990s and won the 1992 European Cup, beating out the likes of Lavinia Milosovici and a very young Lilia Podkopayeva. Unfortunately, her career was plagued by unfortunate injuries and she never won another major senior title or made an Olympic team. Her legacy to the sport is that double-double tuck dismount, named the Fabrichnova.
