Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Brazilian city of "Ouro Preto" is in which Brazilian state?

Answer: Minas Gerais

"Ouro Preto" is located in Minas Gerais, and it literally means "Black Gold" and the city is called that, because it is the town that has produced the most gold of all Brazilian areas. The gold found there was a darker shade of gold, which was rarer at the time of mining so it was more valuable.

The town today, though very touristic, still has no airport or large hotel chains. It wants to remain as it was in the 1700s when gold was actually being mined there.
2. Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city.

Answer: True

Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is the largest Brazilian city, and also the third largest city in the world (2000 Census). It contains about 34 million people. When you pass over it by plane, all you can see is city. It is the capital city of Sao Paulo, and it has the same name as the state that it's located in, as do other states in Brazil.
3. The popular tourist town of Rio De Janeiro is located in which Brazilian state?

Answer: Rio De Janeiro

This city has the same case as Sao Paulo. The capital city is also the name of the state. Similar to that of New York City, except it's not the capital. Rio De Janeiro is a very popular tourist town and it has about five million people living in it.
4. Geography isn't only about cities. What is the highest point in Brazil?

Answer: Pico da Neblina

Pico de Neblina is the highest mountain in Brazil. Some references state it's 3,014m tall, others list it at 2,994m. It is located in the Brazilian state of Roraima, and the peak itself is only several miles from the border of Venezuela, and parts of the foot of the mountain are actually in Venezuela.
5. How many countries does Brazil border?

Answer: ten

Brazil borders ten countries. They are Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Its longest border is shared with the country of Bolivia, on the central-western border. Brazil is the largest country in South America, and thus, most likely will have the largest border.
6. How many independent South American nations does Brazil not share a border with?

Answer: two

Brazil does not share a border with Chile or Ecuador. There is at least a "One-Country" barrier between these countries and Brazil.
7. True or False- Brazil is the South American country that extends the longest longitudinally? (From north to south)

Answer: True

This is true. This question is kind of a trick question, because you would expect Chile to be longer, but it isn't. Chile is about 2,600 miles long, while Brazil is over 2,800 miles long, so Brazil takes the cake here too. Although most people believe Chile to be longer, Brazil is actually the longer one.
8. How many states are contained within Brazil as a country?

Answer: 26

Brazil technically contains only 26 states. There are actually 26 states, and one "Distrito Federal" which translates to "Federal District" which is the direct equivalent to Washington D.C. So there are 27 "provinces", and 26 actual states.
9. One of the largest dams in the world is known as the Itaipu dam. It is located partially in Paraguay, but it is located primarily in which Brazilian state?

Answer: Parana

The Itaipu dam is located in Parana (my home state). Paraguay and Brazil share the electricity that is produced in this dam. Since Paraguay can't use nearly all that electricity, it sells about 46 of its 50 percent of electricity back to Brazil, and gets a hefty check from that. I have visited the dam, and it is quite astonishing.

It has 17 turbines to make electricity, and for the majority of the time, all of the turbines are used.
10. The Itaipu dam uses the force of which river to make its hydroelectricity?

Answer: Parana River

The Parana River forms a large part of the Brazilian border. The city where the electricity is produced is called "Foz Do Iguacu".
