Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Asher, you have a gift. I do not know if it is a gift from the Ribbono Shel Olom or from the Other Side. If it is from the Other Side, then it is foolishness, dangerous foolishness, for it will take you away from Torah and from your people and lead you to think only of yourself."

Answer: Aryeh Lev

Aryeh Lev (Asher's father, works as the emissary for the Rebbe. Here he is lecturing Asher about his artistic abilities (which he refers to often as "gift"). Aryeh disapproves of Asher's gift because they are Hasidic Jews who adhere closely to the Torah and Aryeh sees Asher's gift as a factor that drags him away from his Jewish community and eventually onto the "Other Side" (hell in Jewish terms).
2. "Siberia is the home of the Angel of Death. It is the place where the Angel of Death feeds and grows fat. No one should know of it. No one. Not even my worst enemies..."

Answer: Yudel Krinsky

Yudel Krinsky, as introduced to Asher as one of the few Jews that escaped the Russian camps alive, thanks to the works of Asher's father, describes here the lands of Siberia to Asher. Apparently they see Siberia in an extremely negative spotlight, and Siberia (coldness, ice, etc) becomes a significant symbol in the book.
3. "Many people feel they are in possession of a great gift when they are young. But one does not always have to give in to a gift. One does with a life not only what is precious to one's self, but to one's own people. That is the way our people live..."

Answer: The Mashpia

The Mashpia is similar to a Dean of Students. Asher's drawings constantly gets him into trouble at school, resulting in many visits to the Mashpia. The Mashpia is a very understanding and calm man, and shows great respect to Asher as well as his art.
4. "This is a six-year-old boy? ... A little Chagall."

Answer: Uncle Yitzchok

Uncle Yitzchok is the first person shown in this book to recognize Asher's artistic gift. He is the first to purchase a drawing from Asher, and Yitzchok exhibits characteristics that are contrary to those of Aryeh. Chagall is a famous Jewish painter (in real life) whom is many times compared with Asher.
5. "A man has a will. Do you understand me, Asher? The Ribbono Shel Olom gave every man a will. Every man is responsible for what he does, because he has a will and by that will he directs his life. There is no such thing as a man who can't help it. Only a sick man can't help it."

Answer: Aryeh Lev

Aryeh Lev lecturing again to Asher, showing his ferocity and stubbornness to submit to his son. This quote appears after Asher "unintentionally" desecrates the Torah at school by drawing an evil face of the Rebbe in the pages (which is very, very, very disrespectful).
6. "Listen to me, Asher Lev. As an artist you are responsible to no one and nothing, except to yourself and to the truth as you see it. Do you understand? An artist is responsible to his art. Anything else is propaganda. Anything else is what the Communists in Russia call art."

Answer: Jacob Kahn

Jacob Kahn is a Jewish artist that the Rebbe assigned as a teacher to Asher. The Rebbe trusted Jacob to teach Asher art as well as the importance of his heritage and responsibilities as a Hasidic Jew. Jacob, however, betrays this deal and molded Asher into an artist greater than himself.
7. "Come with me my precious Asher. You and I will walk together now through the centuries, each of us for our separate deeds that unbalanced the world."

Answer: The Mythic Ancestor

At the very end of the book, the Mythic Ancestor that haunted Asher for so long turned tides; he represented Asher's guilt and conscience, and we see by this quote that the Mythic Ancestor is a guide and friend.
8. "Your father did it. It was a creation out of nothing."

Answer: Dov Lieberman

This was Lieberman's comment speaking to Asher (when Asher's art career brought him to Europe) on Aryeh's work for the Rebbe in creating Hasidic schools in Europe.
9. "What is Siberia? It is a land like the inside of this refrigerator. It is a land of ice and darkness where the Russian government sends people it hates... What is Siberia? No one should know of it."

Answer: Mrs. Rackover

Mrs. Rackover (the housekeeper) here responding to one of Asher's questions that she deem as annoying. Asher's curiosity of Siberia is triggered by the meeting with Yudel Krinsky, the man that Asher thought of as a brother.
10. "Go wash your hands. You are driving us all crazy with your pictures and your stubbornness. What kind of Jewish boy behaves this way to a mother and father? You ought to be ashamed of yourself."

Answer: Mrs. Rackover

Mrs. Rackover again. It is true that Asher over and over behaves very immature to his parents with his inconsiderate notions. Numerous times he acts like a child and extremely selfish, and sometimes illogical. In this book Mrs. Rackover never comes to see and realize the true artist abilities and potency of Asher.
