Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose slogan in 1898 was "Brad's drink"?

Answer: Pepsi

According to the company's site, the drink was invented by Caleb Bradham and first served in his shop, Bradham's Drugstore. Brad is thus a contraction of Bradham.
2. In 1900, what would you drink "for headache and exhaustion"?

Answer: Coke

The ad actually stated "For headache and exhaustion drink Coca-Cola."
The oldest ad slogan I was able to find for Coke was an 1886 ad which said simply, "Drink Coca-Cola."
3. What soft drink touted itself in 1900 to be "Deliciously refreshing"?

Answer: Coke

Similar ads ran in 1900 and 1904. The "Delishiously refreshing" ad was from 1900. In 1904 it was modified to "Delicious and Refreshing." Also, in 1904 a bottle of Coke cost just a nickel.
4. Which carbonated beverage ran this slogan in 1903: "Exhilarating, Invigorating, Aids Digestion"?

Answer: Pepsi

Also, in 1908, Pepsi advertised that it was "Delicious and Healthful." In 1934, it was "Refreshing and Healthful." Obviously, Pepsi was supposed to be good for you. That's fine, but I'm still wondering who Brad is.
5. Which soft drink was "the original real food drink"?

Answer: Pepsi

I was always under the impression that the original real food drink was water--or maybe even milk.
6. In 1905, what was "the favorite drink for ladies when thirsty, weary, and despondent"?

Answer: Coke

Too bad if you were a guy! Other 1905 slogans for Coke were "Coca-Cola revives and sustains," "good all the way down," "sold in bottles," and "flows from every fountain."
7. In 1906, which carbonated beverage was "The Great National Temperance Drink"?

Answer: Coke

Rum and Coke anyone? Just kidding.
8. In 1914, which soft drink's slogan was "Nicknames encourage substitutions"?

Answer: Coke

By this time, Coke was highly aware that sometimes asking for a "Coke" didn't mean you would actually receive a "Coca-Cola." In 1912, Coke's slogan was "Demand the genuine--refuse substitutes." In 1913, Coke's slogan was "Ask for it by name, then you will get the genuine."
9. In 1939, what soft drink gave you "twice as much for a nickel"?

Answer: Pepsi

In 1934 Pepsi advertised itself as "double size." In 1943, Pepsi advertised itself as "Bigger Drink, Better Taste." In 1949, the slogan was "Why take less when Pepsi's best." You would have thought during those intervening fifteen years Coke would have increased the number of ounces in their servings.
10. Here is one I love! In 1973, what carbonated soft drink advertised itself as "Lipsmackin', thistquenchin', acetastin', motivatin', goodbuzzin, cooltalkin', highwalkin', fastlivin', evergivin' and coolfizzin'"?

Answer: Pepsi

In the 1960's Pepsi started advertising to a younger audience, 1961--"Now it's Pepsi for those who think young," and 1964--"Come alive! You're in the Pepsi Generation."
11. In 1970, what cola advertised itself as "the real thing"?

Answer: Coke

The advertising firm of McCann-Erickson likely made their fortune with that slogan! They also came up with the "I'd like to buy the world Coke" campaign in 1971.
12. In 1986, what cola advised you to "catch the wave"?

Answer: Coke

Coke got patriotic in 1986 too, another slogan from that year was "Red, White & You."
13. In 1997, what cola had the slogan "Generation Next"?

Answer: Pepsi

By this time, the slogan "Pepsi is the choice of a new generation" had been around several years.
14. In 2002, what cola's slogan was "for those who think young"?

Answer: Pepsi

In 2002, Diet Pepsi's slogan was "Sip into something irresistible."

A special thank you to zeke68 for discovering who "Brad" was. Should have been easy for me! The inventor of Pepsi was pharmacist Caleb Bradham.
15. In 1985, what cola was "America's real choice"?

Answer: Coke

In 2001 it was "Life tastes good".
