Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We choose to fly into Barcelona, and immediately immerse ourselves in the Catalan culture. We visit the famous houses designed by Antonio Gaudi, and find our way to his massive church still under construction, taking the tiny elevator to the top of one of the spires. What is the name of this eye-catching cathedral?

Answer: Sagrada Familia

Begun in 1882, with no reliable completion date in sight, Gaudi made it his life's work and lived at the site for sixteen years. He took over the project the year after it was started, at age 31, and is buried in the crypt.
2. We decide to take a day trip and head to Catalonia's holiest place. The road winds upward to mountains which are angular and jagged, and we reach a large complex nestled at the base of mountain peaks, and surrounded by hermit caves and chapels. A famous choir is housed here. What is the name of this place?

Answer: Montserrat

It is also the site of one of the more famous "Black Virgin" statues, originally thought to date from 50 A.D. but subsequently attributed to the 12th century by carbon dating. Montserrat means "serrated mountain".
3. In Barcelona, we head out for a fancy dinner. Before what time need we not bother to find most restaurants open?

Answer: 9 P.M.

You better eat a big lunch. If you're out late, you will still see lots of activity at midnight, even in smaller towns.
4. Food: which of the following is not a Spanish tradition?

Answer: Pesto

Pesto is from Genoa in the Ligurian region of Italy
5. After staying in a wonderful castle parador in Cardona, we buy some kitschy salt sculptures produced from the nearby salt mountain, and head to the city of the "hanging houses", formerly serving as summer homes for the royal family. Where are we?

Answer: Cuenca

Perched on a series of cliffs, the city is accessed from the parador, which is also on a cliff, by a metal footbridge over a chasm.
6. We buy some of the famous burnt yellow and blue hand painted pottery for which the region is famous and head towards Toledo. We stay at the wonderful modern parador overlooking the city, and in the evening are dazzled by one of the most beautiful views in Europe. Toledo has a rich tradition in manufacturing and the arts. Which of the following is not associated with Toledo?

Answer: Goya

Damascene metalwork is produced by applying precious metals on a oxidized black metal surface. El Greco lived in Toledo for many years, and his house can be visited. Toledo steel is famous for swordmaking, and even U,S, military sabers have been made of Toledo steel.
7. Madrid has been Spain's capital since 1561. The Plaza Mayor, or main square is now a charming place with cafés and artist displaying their wares. What was the Plaza Mayor used for in the past?

Answer: Trials of the Spanish Inquisition

Other events held here include bullfights, pageants, beatification of saints, and executions.
8. We travel to the most famous part of Spain, Andalusia, which was under Moorish occupation for over 500 years. We travel first to Cordoba, and go to the famed Mezquita. What is the Mezquita?

Answer: A mosque converted to a church

This 12 century old mosque was converted to a church in the 16th century. In my opinion, this huge structure with over 850 columns of granite, jasper, and marble and the alternating red and beige arches is the most spectacular sight in all of Spain.
9. We buy our red earthenware pottery with bright color and "liquid" metal accents and move on to Seville. We stay nearby in Carmona, in another fabulous parador which was a Moorish fortress, complete with inner courtyards with fountains and balconies where one can see for miles across the plains. We make a quick trip to Seville and visit it's most famous sight, La Giralda, the bell tower of the cathedral. What was the original function of this tower?

Answer: A minaret

Constructed during Moorish occupation in 1198, it has ornate ornamentation and is topped by a bronze weathervane portraying faith, from which the tower takes its name.
10. In Spain we take in one more crowning jewel. The Alhambra in Granada is arguably the most famous of Spain's sights. What was the Alhambra created to emulate?

Answer: Paradise

This Moorish palace is perhaps the most richly ornamented building in the western world.
