Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is not a recognized gait in dressage?

Answer: Rack

The rack is performed by some gaited horses, including the American Saddlebred. The rack is sometimes referred to as the "single-foot" because, when done properly, there are moments when only one hoof is supporting the horse.
2. What is the top level of dressage competition?

Answer: Grand Prix

The highest competition in dressage is the Grand Prix in the Dressage Competition in the Olympic Games.
3. What is the object of dressage, according to the USA Equestrian rules?

Answer: The development of the horse's physical abilities

This development results in a calm, confident, flexible, and attentive horse. This makes it look like the horse and rider are thinking as one and the horse is doing everything of his own accord.
4. Which of these letters is not used in a standard dressage arena?

Answer: N

The basic letters in a standard arena are:C, M, B, F, A, K, E, H, & X. The subdividing letters are: R, P, V, S, G, I, L, & D.
5. Which of these aids is *not usually* used in a half-halt?

Answer: voice

The half-halt is used to balance the horse and prepare him for the next transition or movement the rider will be asking. It is basically the rider clearing her throat before speaking.
6. What is another word for "haunches-in"?

Answer: Travers

Renvers is "haunches-out", piaffe is a trot almost in place, and the half-pass is moving sideways and forward with the horse looking in the direction he is moving.
7. When holding the reins properly, which part of the hand should be highest?

Answer: thumb

Riding with both hands is required except when riding a Freestyle Test or when leaving the arena. Riders with special Dispensation Certificates are allowed to use special equipment when, due to disability, they are unable to use one or both hands.
8. Which type of equine may not be ridden in dressage classes?

Answer: donkey

The only competitions that mules may not be ridden in is in USET championships or USET qualification trials. They are also ineligible for international competition.
9. At what level can a double-bridle begin being used?

Answer: 3rd

FEI tests(the Prix St. Georges) require a double bridle while it is not allowed in tests below 3rd Level.
10. What is the definition of "tracking up"?

Answer: The hind feet stepping into the tracks of the fore feet

The horse can also bring the hind feet in front of the tracks of the fore feet. "Tracking up" demonstrates that the horse is on the bit and moving off of his haunches.
