Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which town did Reverend Hale come to Salem?

Answer: Beverly

Hale found a witch in Beverly, who was hanged. For this, his skills as a witch-finder spread throughout the province. He was summoned by Reverend Parris.
2. Which of the girls gave Elizabeth Proctor a poppet that she made while in court?

Answer: Mary Warren

The poppet was the main piece of evidence used against Elizabeth Proctor when she was accused, as Mary had left a needle in it by mistake. The court took this as a sure sign of witchcraft when Abigail, seeking to exploit Mary's forgetfulness, pulled a needle from her own stomach.
3. Goody Osburn was the first person to officially be accused as being a witch by the court of Salem.

Answer: False

It was actually Sarah Good who was first accused by the court. Tituba accused Goody Good first and Goody Osburn second when accused herself.
4. According to Tituba, who did the devil order her to kill?

Answer: Reverend Parris

When forced to falsely confess, Tituba told of how the Devil promised her pretty dresses, and to return her home to Barbados if she did his bidding.
5. How many people sign the deposition giving their good opinion of Elizabeth Proctor, Martha Corey and Rebbecca Nurse?

Answer: 91

After seeing this deposition, Governer Danforth had arrest warrents drawn up for all those who signed it. It is because of this that Giles Corey refuses to give the name of his informant, and so is arrested himself for contempt of the court.
6. Which character is pressed to death?

Answer: Giles Corey

When Corey refuses to give the name of his informant, it is decided that he will be pressed until he gives it. This procedure involves laying a board across the victim and steadily piling stones on top until the victim either gives information or is crushed to death. Giles Corey's only words were "More weight".
7. How much money does Abigail steal from Reverend Parris' strongbox?

Answer: 31 pounds

When Abigail and Mercy ran from the town, they took with them Parris' savings. Parris seemed to bemoan the lost money rather than his niece.
8. How many death warrants did Governer Danforth claim he had written?

Answer: 72

He had nearly 400 jailed. Hale also added his signature, but later regretted it to such an extent that he quit the court.
9. Apart from Betty Parris, which girl seems unable to wake at the beginning of the play?

Answer: Ruth Putnam

The difference was that Ruth's eyes were open and she walked about, and Betty's closed and she lay still. To all appearances, both were fast asleep.
10. Which character accompanied John Proctor to the gallows, and hung with him?

Answer: Rebecca Nurse

Rebecca was accused of the super-natural murder of the Putnam babies, none of which lived to be more than a day old before dying, except Ruth Putnam. It was Rebecca's goodness that persuaded Proctor not to confess, and die an honest man.
