Quebec City is the capital of the province of Quebec. It is the only remaining walled city in North America north of Mexico. This helped to have it recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The city lies at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Saint-Charles rivers, about 240 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The St. Lawrence River narrows near Montreal, making it impossible for large ocean-going freighters to travel past that city. Instead, many of the large ships travel to the port at Quebec City.

This has resulted in Quebec City being a centre for transatlantic trade in Canada. Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in Canada. It celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2008, having been founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain.

Nunavut is Canada's newest territory. It was created on April 1, 1999 when a new boundary was drawn in the Northwest Territories (NWT) to create a smaller NWT and a large territory called Nunavut. The new name means "our land" in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people who inhabit the area. Nunavut lies in the far north of Canada.

As far as Canada's provinces go, Quebec is the largest with 1,365,128 sq km. Next is Ontario with 917,741 sq km. Nunavut is much larger than both of these provinces. It has a total area of 1,936,113 sq km and makes up 21% of Canada's total area. This makes Nunavut the fifth largest territory or state in the world, after Sakha Republic (Russia, 3,103,200 sq km), Western Australia (Australia, 2,615,602 sq km), Krasnoyarsk (Russia, 3,339,700 sq km) and Greenland (Denmark, 2,166,086 sq km). As a side note, Nunavut is only between 24 and 32 kilometres from Greenland across the Kennedy Channel.

The capital of Nova Scotia is Halifax. As of the 2021 Census, Halifax was the largest city in Atlantic Canada. Halifax sits on the south shore of the province, roughly halfway between its eastern and western ends. The capital of British Columbia is Victoria which is located on Vancouver Island. Newfoundland & Labrador is Canada's newest province.

It is made up of Labrador, a section that is on the mainland of Canada, and Newfoundland, an island off the east coast of the country. The capital of the province is St. John's, which can be found on the island portion of the province. Prince Edward Island is Canada's only province that is an island.

Its capital is Charlottetown.

Alberta is one of Canada's western prairie provinces. Canada's Maritimes include three provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. When they are discussed with the other eastern province, Newfoundland and Labrador, they are said to make up the Atlantic provinces.

The word "maritime" means "connected with the sea, especially in relation to seafaring commercial or military activity". Each of the Maritime provinces is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. This has allowed each to gain from commercial pursuits such as fishing, as well as military pursuits such as Canadian Forces Base Halifax, Canada's eastern naval base.

According to some sources, Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined. It has been suggested that there may be as many as two million lakes in the country, with 563 of them larger than 100 square kilometres. Among its largest lakes are Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories, Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, and the Great Lakes (shared with the US) in Ontario. Manitoba is also known for its many lakes.

There, you will find Lake Winnipegosis, Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. Lake Winnipeg is Canada's fifth largest, and the world's eleventh largest lake.

Saskatchewan lies in central Canada, and is considered a prairie province. It is the only Canadian province or territory whose borders are totally defined by parallels and meridians. It is located between the 49th and 60th parallels North, and the 101°21'41″ and 110th meridians West. Even though it is known as a prairie province, the northern half of the province is actually covered with boreal forests.

It is bordered by the Northwest Territories to the north, Manitoba to the east, Alberta to the west, and the US states Montana and North Dakota to the south.

At 651,036 square km, it is Canada's seventh largest province or territory, similar in size to Afghanistan.

Edmonton is the most northerly city in North America with a population of over one million people. It follows that it is the most northerly provincial capital in Canada. The North Saskatchewan River flows through the city. The river valley provides the longest connected urban park in North America.

The city has also been identified as having the most parkland per capita of any city in Canada.

The Atlantic Ocean borders the east coast of Canada, including Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The Pacific Ocean borders Canada's west coast at British Columbia. Canada's three territories border the Arctic Ocean.

Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories trademarked itself as the Diamond Capital of North America in 1999 in recognition of the three diamond mines that can be found there. Besides the diamond mines, Yellowknife has lots of interesting things in its geography.

It sits on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, the deepest lake in North America and the 10th-largest lake by area on the planet. The city is located only 3,062 kilometres south of the North Pole. This makes it an ideal location for viewing the Aurora Borealis from late fall through spring.

The Northwest Territories is the only political region in Canada which recognizes eleven official languages, five of which you can find spoken frequently in Yellowknife: French and English, and the First Nations languages Dene Suline, Dogrib and Slavey.

The border between Canada and the United Stages is 8,891 kilometres long, making it the longest international border in the world. Thirteen states lie along the border. Alaska shares the longest border, at 2,475 kilometres with British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. Pennsylvania has the shortest border with Canada, with only 68 kilometres shared.
