Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many people head to this city to seek fame and fortune. This is where Hole was formed; what city is it?

Answer: Los Angeles

The alternative rock band Hole was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1989. Singer Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson formed the band after Erlandson responded to an ad posted by Love. In the ad, Love wrote "I want to start a band. My influences are Big Black, Sonic Youth, and Fleetwood Mac." Love had been trying to start a band for a while, in San Francisco and Portland before moving to Los Angeles.

The band was originally going to be called Sweet Baby Crystal Powered by God but Love settled on the name Hole. Love has said the name of the band was inspired by her mom, by a quote from the Greek tragedy "Medea" and yes as a reference to genitals.
2. This member of Sonic Youth had a hand in Hole's success. Who was it that produced Hole's first album?

Answer: Kim Gordon

The debut album by Hole is called "Pretty on the Inside" and was released in 1991. The loud punk rock-inspired album was named the top album of the year by "Village Voice." Love wanted Kim Gordon, of Sonic Youth fame, to produce the album as she was a fan of the band.

She sent a letter, a barrette (Hello Kitty) and copies of the band's early music to Gordon and asked her to be involved in the making of the album. Gordon was impressed with what she heard and agreed. The band released one single from the album called "Teenage Whore" and embarked on a tour to support it, playing in Europe and in the United States at renowned rock clubs such as CBGB in New York City and Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles.
3. What was the debut single from Hole's third studio album (it has the same name as the album)?

Answer: Celebrity Skin

"Celebrity Skin" is the tenth single released by Hole and the debut single from their third studio album. Released in 1998, it reached number one on the US and Canadian alternative charts and was a top twenty hit in the United Kingdom and Iceland. The song is about celebrity and includes literary references from Shakespeare and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame wrote the guitar riff for the song.
