Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does the Labrador retriever come in a true silver?

Answer: No

Labrador retrievers come in only three colors: black, yellow and chocolate. Yellow can range from a deep fox red shade to an almost white, and chocolate can range from deep brown to almost "silver." Silver Labs are not worth more money because of their shading.
2. As soon as I get home from taking the dogs on a swim, it is imperative to immediately give them a bath with soap and water.

Answer: False

A Lab is not the cleanest dog in the world, but too many baths can strip the oils in his or her coat and cause dryness of both coat and skin. It is best to rinse the dog off with clear water, and allow its coat to dry naturally rather than giving a bath with soap and water.
3. Labradors are great hunting dogs, but what are their "sleeping accommodations" of choice?

Answer: In your home, in your bed if at all possible.

While Labradors are capable of handling many different "sleeping accommodations", their favorite is to be indoors, and many love sleeping with their owners if allowed. If left outside, in the kennel, or in the truck, they often bark for attention and out of boredom.
4. The best reason for getting a Lab is:

Answer: Because you are prepared and have done your homework and have determined this is the best breed for you.

While it's true that Labs do love children it is not the best reason for getting a lab. It is imperative you do your homework on what you are purchasing before you bring the bundle of joy home. In addition, Labs are very intelligent and learn quickly, but they require a great deal of training to become the "gentlemen/gentle-ladies" they can be.

As for shedding, Labs are one of the biggest shedders in the dog world. They do not do well in homes where there is a concern about dog hair.
5. My Lab has black spots on his tongue! Oh no! It must be mixed with Chow! Is this statement true or false?

Answer: False - the black spot is similar to a birthmark, and many breeds have it.

It is true that the black spot in any dog is typically nothing more than a birthmark. Chow Chows do not have black tongues - their tongues are more purplish. While some dogs mixed with Chow Chow do have purple spots, that does not mean that dogs with black or purple spots are mixed with Chow Chows.
6. My dog has just come in from a swim and her tail is hanging almost straight down. She acts as if it hurts. What is probably wrong?

Answer: She has cold water tail - also known as limber tail.

Cold water tail, or limber tail is a condition which occurs usually after a Labrador has been in cold water and has overdone it. This condition is usually treated with mild aspirin. Most vets are not familiar with this condition, and therefore will tell you your dog has sprained its tail or has stomach cramps. Just because you suspect this condition does not, however, mean a vet visit is not in order - but it is something to consider during diagnosis.
7. Labs are prone to many genetic health conditions. Which one are they *not* prone to?

Answer: Rage syndrome

Rage syndrome is typically associated with springer spaniels as opposed to Labradors.
8. Labradors are beautiful dogs who can compete in which of the following dog sports:

Answer: All of these.

Labradors are very good at all of the above sports. Not every single Lab is good at every single one, but many of them can do multiple canine sports with ease.
9. Labs were first bred for what purpose?

Answer: Retrieving fishing nets

While Labs are typically very good at all four, the Labrador was initially bred to retrieve fishing nets in their native Newfoundland.
10. Labs are always hungry. This is a fact; but should you limit your Labrador's intake of food? Or should you allow it to eat all it wants?

Answer: Most Labradors do not do well on free feeding as they eat too much. It is best to carefully measure their food at each meal and limit treats.

While some are able to free feed their Labradors, it is not recommended for most. This is because most Labs have difficulty understanding when they should stop eating. Their treats should also be limited, as many Labradors do have problems with obesity as do many people.
