Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I generally use patterns for my creations. Crochet patterns have a number of abbreviations. What is the full term for "yo"?

Answer: yarn over

In order to understand any crochet patterns, you need to understand the lingo. Because there are so many variations in a pattern, space is saved by the abbreviations.
2. Continuing on with abbreviations, what common stitch is represented by "sc"?

Answer: single crochet

Other common stitches seen in most patterns are ch (chain), dc (double crochet), sl st (slip stitch), and sp (space). This is by no means a complete list.
3. Many people start out crocheting this "relatively" easy pattern.

Answer: Granny Square

The granny square is an extremely versatile design. There are whole pattern books devoted to the types of granny squares and variations. You can make basic afghans, sweaters, doilies - there is a whole range. If you have extra yarn left over from other projects, consider making a scrap granny square afghan as a unique gift.
4. You've found the perfect bedspread to make. The dimensions are exactly right, and you love the yarn. Being a careful crocheter, you make a test swatch so that it turns out exactly the size you want. In crochet terms, what are you doing?

Answer: checking gauge

Checking your gauge is especially important for making sweaters and other fitted patterns. To be honest, I usually don't check my gauge when I make an afghan - it's just a personal preference of mine, but not generally recommended if you are going for a specific size.
5. Oh no! While measuring your test swatch, you see that its overall measurements are too small! What method is most commonly recommended for increasing the size of your crocheting?

Answer: use a bigger crochet hook

Most crocheters develop a rhythm in their stitches, with a set tension. Making looser stitches will work, but as you start really getting into the rhythm most people start making smaller and smaller stitches. You certainly could use use two strands, but in most cases this will just make more of an expense for you. If you are good at reading the pattern, then you certainly could add extra stitches, along with the extra time. Generally it's just easier to use the bigger hook.
6. What size hook would you choose from these listed to make an thread doily? (answers are a US and metric mix)

Answer: 7

There are many sizes of hooks. Size 7 (4.5 mm) is most commonly called for in thread crochet (again, check your gauge!). Converting US to metric gets tricky. The 3.5 mm equates to an E hook, appropriate for fine yarns. The 6 mm is a J hook, which is a nice size for heavier yarns or larger stitches. U hooks are among the largest hooks, measuring 25 mm (a full inch).
7. When looking for yarn, what is 4-ply yarn generally referred to (US usage)?

Answer: worsted weight

Most brands of worsted-weight yarn come in the largest variety of colors, and I generally use it even when the pattern calls for sport or baby yarn. It's more forgiving, too, if you discover a mistake and have to rip apart a few rows!
8. There is a hook that allows you to crochet stitches that look like rows of knitting. What is this hook called?

Answer: afghan hook

Afghan hooks are usually the length of a common knitting needle, with crochet hook at both ends. They come in a variety of sizes and, you guessed it, are generally used for making afghans.
9. What common pattern might the following be a variation of? "dc fp next 3 sts, dc bp next 3 sts, continue pat until end of row, turn"

Answer: basketweave

The basketweave is one of my favorites, and also another easy pattern for beginners. The result is a very warm creation, great for those cold winter nights.
10. Which of these shapes can you NOT make with crochet?

Answer: you can make all of these

All of these have patterns available!

Crocheting is a great way to make a beautiful hand-made gift for any occasion. I hope that you enjoyed a few questions from my favorite hobby!
