Answer: Once Upon A Time In America

Though many skated to Gladiator in 2000-01 season, Evgeni was not one of them. His program was a medley of various works, including 'Cotton Club' and 'Once Upon A Time In America'. In later versions he also had 'Mortal Kombat' in there. He did skate to Carmen and Michael Jackson, but in the following year when he won the Olympic Silver Medal, and was too injured to compete in the 2002 World Championships.

Though he was famous for his work with violinist Edvin Marton, the first composer he worked with was Igor Korneliuk in the 2002-03 season. His coach knew him, and they asked Korneliuk to rearrange music he previously wrote for a Russian television show, "Bandistky St. Petersburg" (Criminal of St. Petersburg) in honor of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, where Evgeni moved to when he was 11 years old.

His long program was to 'The Godfather', his short was to an electric guitar version of Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata'. The 2004-05 season was not a successful one for Evgeni, as he had a lingering knee injury since 2003, as well as lingering back and finally groin problems, and a sickness in July of 2004. Evgeni withdrew from the 2005 World Championships after the short program, too injured to continue.

He was a heavy favorite along with Alexei Yagudin to win. Plushenko worked hard in the long program and walked away with the silver, while Yagudin, with two magnificent performances, got the gold.

Evgeni was coached by Makoveyev when he was a child. When he was 11, the rink in his hometown of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) closed, and he moved by himself to St. Petersburg to train with Alexei Mishin. His mother would arrive 6 months later, and his father and sister remained in Volgograd until 1999 when Evgeni could afford to bring them home to live with him and his mother.

Evgeni started working with the virtuoso violinist in the fall of 2003. He hired him to compose and arrange music for his 'Tribute to Nijinsky' program. He later arranged versions of "The Godfather" for his 2004-06 long program (he reprised it in 2005-06), and "Tosca" in 2005-06.

Evgeni landed this historic combination in mid-November 1999 at the NHK Trophy in Japan. Since he was born on November 3rd, 1982, he was 17 years old when he landed this. ABC's commentators stated that no one thought he would actually try it in competition.
