Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Essex coat of arms has a red background and three curved seaxes. What is a seaxe?

Answer: A sword

A seaxe is a type of sword which evolved from the Anglo-Saxon short sword. It was in common usage from the 6th to the 13th centuries in England.
2. When Boudicca and the Iceni tribe rebelled against the Romans in 60/61 AD, they burned the town of Camulodunum (Colchester) to the ground. A specific target was a temple dedicated to which Roman Emperor?

Answer: Claudius

Nero was Emperor at the time of the revolt. Although there had been several attempts at invasion by the Romans in the past, the main and most successful one happened under Claudius in 43 AD.
3. In the 19th century, which royal person stayed in Southend-on-Sea, helping it to gain popularity as a seaside resort?

Answer: Princess Caroline of Brunswick

Princess Caroline of Brunswick was married to the Prince Regent, later King George IV. Their marriage was a turbulent and unhappy one. It is perhaps a sign of this that while Princess Caroline popularised Southend-on-Sea, King George IV made Brighton in Sussex a fashionable bathing resort.

While Southend-on-Sea boasts a large statue of Queen Victoria pointing over the Thames Estuary, I could find no evidence that she actually visited the town.
4. What is the county town of Essex?

Answer: Chelmsford

Chelmsford has been the county town of Essex since the 13th century. Colchester is England's oldest recorded town and Basildon is a new town developed in the fifties and sixties to accommodate the overspill population from London. Brentwood is another old town where one can view the ruins of the 12th century chapel dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket.
5. In 1898 a factory was opened in Chelmsford. It was the first factory in the world dedicated to the manufacture of what item(s)?

Answer: Radio equipment

Guglielmo Marconi established the factory on the site of an old silk factory. A new factory was built in 1912. It was from this site that the first public entertainment broadcast in Britain was transmitted in June 1920, when Dame Nelly Melba's voice wafted over the airwaves.
6. Where is the 'V' music festival held every August?

Answer: Hylands Park

The V festival takes place simultaneously on two sites, the other one being Weston Park in Staffordshire. The first festival was held in 1996. The V Festival is less rock oriented than some other music festivals. Acts over the years have included such diverse talents as James Brown, Oasis, Supergrass and Atomic Kitten.
7. Which popular attraction can be found in the grounds of Stanway Hall?

Answer: A zoo

Colchester Zoo was first opened in 1963, when it was known as Stanway Hall Zoo Park. Over the years it has expanded from 25 acres to over 50 acres and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year.
8. Brentwood School is a public school established in 1558. Which of the following did not attend the school?

Answer: David Essex

David Essex grew up in Canning Town, East London and played football for West Ham Juniors for a time. Noel Edmonds is a disc jockey/TV presenter, Jack Straw is a politician and Keith Allen is an actor.
9. During Tudor times, Rochford Hall belonged to the family of which of Henry VIII's wives?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

It is thought that Anne Boleyn spent part of her childhood at Rochford Hall. Anne's father, Thomas, was created Viscount Rochford in 1525 and after his death Anne's sister Mary inherited Rochford Hall. Rochford hall is now divided into apartments and the grounds are home to Rochford Hundred Golf Club.
10. What was discovered in Prittlewell (near Southend-on-Sea) in 2003?

Answer: The burial site of a 7th century Saxon prince

No human remains were found in the tomb. It was thought that the sandy composition of the soil hastened their complete decay. Finds in the tomb included jewellery, weapons and domestic artefacts. The contents of the tomb are on display at the Museum of London.

Prittlewell was also home to Prittlewell Priory. St. Mary's Church in Prittlewell was founded in Saxon times, although it was rebuilt completely between the 12th and 16th centuries.
