Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What body part did Jackie break in all of the following films: 'First Strike' (1996), 'Armour of God' (1987), 'The Young Master' (1980), 'Project A' (1983) and 'Mister Nice Guy'?

Answer: nose

During 'Project A' in 1983, Chan officially formed the Jackie Chan Stunt Team. This has allowed him to train and work with a group of trusted martial artists and stuntmen for each of the movies he has starred in since. Many in the industry believe that this move helped Jackie limit the number of injuries he would have endured over the years.
2. Which injury did Jackie receive while making 'Supercop' (1993)?

Answer: dislocated cheekbone

Jackie proclaimed, "I didn't even know you could DO that!" about the injury. As injuries go, this was one of his more minor ones. Unlike many others, he was able to continue working with very little interruption. Other dislocated body parts on Jackie: pelvis, sternum, shoulder & neck.
3. What apparatus was the cause of Jackie Chan's broken ankle in 'Rumble in the Bronx' (1995)?

Answer: a hovercraft

Jacking jumped from a bridge onto a hovercraft. As he turned his body to avoid smacking into a wall, his ankle remained planted causing it to break in two places. Doctors instructed him to remain off of the injury until it was healed. True to Jackie form, he decided finishing the movie was more important than letting his body mend. So he went back to the set and put a sock on his broken foot, painted to look like a sneaker and finished filming.
4. In which of these films did Jackie narrowly miss paralysis from an injury to the seventh and eight vertebrae in his spine?

Answer: 'Police Story' (1985)

The review from "Film Comment" was "James Bond, Watch out!" in regard to this film. Instead, Jackie may have wanted to watch out for the pole he slid down as a part of a major action sequence. Not only did it cause the major back injury, he also severely burned his hands and dislocated his pelvis.

After the stunt, in which he leaped 10 feet to grab the pole, slid down 70 feet and crashed through a glass ceiling back first, Jackie stoop up to let everyone know he was okay. Blood gushed from his mouth and he passed out.

It turned out he had internal bleeding. Chan later told those reporting on the incident that it was the only time in his career he thought he might not survive a stunt. Within just a few hours, he was back on the set.
5. It happened during the filming of 'City Hunter' (1993): to what did Jackie attribute the worst knee injury he had ever sustained?

Answer: a skateboard

Although he has suffered more knee injuries than he can count, Jackie says his worst knee injury was suffered as a result of this stunt he was performing in the film 'City Hunter'. During one of the opening scenes of the film, Jackie has a long sequence that features a wild ride on a skateboard through a plate of glass several floors up.

It was this scene that caused the knee injury. During this film Jackie also dislocated his shoulder.
6. In which film can you see Jackie's honest reaction to his arm literally being sliced open by a real sword, that was mistaken for one with a blunt edge?

Answer: 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow' (1978)

While shooting a fight scene in 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow', Jackie's arm was slashed so severely that blood gushed everywhere. Jackie fell down screaming in pain. Unbelievably, the camera continued to roll and caught it all on film. When one watches the film now, the reaction they see is the result of that interaction and is in fact, Jackie's genuine reaction to his injury.
7. What injury did Jackie sustain while filming 'Crime Story' (1993)?

Answer: two broken legs

Jackie had a major setback during the filming of 'Crime Story'. Unlike some of his other injuries in which he could continue on undaunted, this time he crushed both of his legs when he was caught between two cars. It was one of the most serious injuries of his career.
8. 'The Young Master'" (1980): what complication came with Jackie's throat injury?

Answer: he nearly suffocated

One of Jackie's many brushes with death, during the filming he sustained a throat injury that made it difficult for him to breathe and he nearly suffocated. This is one of the many injuries that has made him uninsurable. It is also one of the reasons that in the United States there are many restrictions on the stunts that Jackie is allowed to perform.
9. Which two senses have been most hampered by Jackie's work in films?

Answer: hearing & sight

Although all of his senses have probably been somewhat hampered, the two that have been medically diagnosed as hampered are hearing and sight. During 'Drunken Master' (1978), Jackie's injury to his brow ridge was so severe that he nearly lost an eye. Even worse, a fall in the film 'Armour of God' (1987) left him with permanent partial hearing loss in one ear.
10. It happened in 'Armor of God' (1987) : without doubt it's probably the absolute worst injury Jackie Chan had ever endured as a result of his work in films. What was it?

Answer: a brain hemorrhage

Ironically, it was an easy stunt that he'd performed many times before that caused his most life threatening injury. In the stunt, he was to jump from a wall to a tree below him. He performed it once but was not satisfied. So, he tried again. On the second jump he missed the branch he was going for and landed head first on the rocks below.

A piece of his skull cracked and shot up into his brain. Blood began to pour from his ears. He was immediately rushed to a hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery.

He eventually had a full recovery but to this day has a permanent hole in his head that is now filled with a plastic plug.
