Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In most diagrams, the stomach is drawn to look pink; why is that?

Answer: it is made up of smooth muscle

The three layers of stomach muscle help the stomach digest mechanically. The muscles contract and relax to make the food churn to break it down into a liquid. The stomach is a bean-shaped hollow organ. By the way, there are three types of muscle: smooth, cardiac, and skeletal.
2. This organ has villi.

Answer: small intestine

Nutrients diffuse through the villi, which are projections sticking out of the walls of the small intestine, into the blood.
3. There are big, white, hard objects in this region.

Answer: mouth

These "big, white, hard objects" are your teeth! There are four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. They are used to tear, scrape at, and chew food.
4. In this region, there's a big pinkish hairy thing hauling the food into a hole.

Answer: mouth

This pinkish "monster" is the tongue. This "monster" is also connected to the salivary gland which makes saliva, which break down carbohydrates and turns it into sugars. The tongue "hauls" the food into the esophagus.
5. It takes around ten seconds for food to go down this skinny little tube.

Answer: esophagus

The food travels from the mouth into the esophagus, then into the stomach. Food travels through the esophagus in ten seconds. Food is passed through the esophagus by the process of peristalsis. Peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction of smooth muscles to propel contents through the digestive tract.
6. In this organ, bacteria live and help to dry up food.

Answer: large intestine

The bacteria help to extract the rest of the nutrients and suck the water out of the food. These bacteria help us make vitamin K.
7. Food stays here for 6-8 hours.

Answer: stomach

Food stays in the stomach for up to eight hours! This is where a lot of the digestion process takes place.
8. After digested food goes through this organ, it would be in the anus.

Answer: large intestine

The anus is where you excrete solid waste from when you go to the bathroom. The anus is also the external opening of the rectum. The anus is the last part of the digestive system.
9. This organ contains layers of mucus.

Answer: esophagus

The esophagus is sometimes also known as "the gullet". It is from the Greek word oisophagos which means "entrance for eating".
10. Where is bile used to digest food?

Answer: small intestine

Bile from the liver helps break down fats in the small intestine! Did you know that the digestive system is also called the gastrointestinal tract? The pancreas stores the bile waiting to be used.
