Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the second best Texas Hold'em Poker hand?

Answer: Straight Flush

Royal Flush ranks as the best hand in a game of poker (A,K,Q,J,10 all of the same suit), a Straight Flush is not far behind, followed by a four of a kind and a full house. These are more often than not winning hands in Texas Hold'em Poker.
2. In poker lingo, who is a 'donkey?'

Answer: A player who makes illogical bets or raises with poor quality hands.

I am quite used to playing against 'donkeys' in lower level competition. We all encounter these types of players, but the beauty of poker is that everyone plays differently and the challenge is recognising and analysing what style each individual player is adopting. If you have a high quality hand, you can gain plenty of money off 'donkeys' if you allow let them to make the pace in a game of poker.
3. If you are dealt a 6,2 offsuit, should you think you have the worst hand in poker?

Answer: No

The worst hand in poker circles is considered to be a 7,2 offsuit. Similiar to a 16 in Blackjack it is hard to win against your opposition. A 6,2 is considered to be better due to the fact there is a possibility of getting a straight (6,5,4,3,2), whereas this is not possible with a 7,2. But these are 2 hands I would definitely fold in high-stake games.
4. Who won the 2007 WPT World Championships at the Bellagio Casino?

Answer: Juan Carlos Mortensen

Mortensen, nicknamed 'The Matador,' beat out Morrison for the top prize. Born in 1972 in Ecuador, he is a former chess and pool player. His win in 2007, along with his World Series of Poker Main Event win in 2001, made him the first person to win both the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour Championships.
5. A player is said to be 'on tilt.' What does this mean?

Answer: The player's emotions are disrupting their ability to play.

I find it hard not be 'on tilt' after losing with a decent hand. The best poker players are able to deal with things that don't go their way with composure and patience. Players 'on tilt' are in danger of losing by playing hands in a different manner to which they usually would if they were thinking logically. Poker is a game of luck but a player also needs strong psychological abilities to outwit their opponents.
6. Which of the following is the best 'tell' of a strong hand?

Answer: Sighing

In my poker experiences, I have always been on the lookout for and been wary of what 'tells' I convey to my opponents. Players that sigh and look at their chips generally indicate that they have a strong hand. This obviously displays confidence. The other three possibilities normally indicate a player has a weak hand. Tactically, a player who can use a 'tell' to indicate a weak hand when in fact they have a strong hand can usually gain an advantage over their competitors.
7. I have an Ace and King dealt to me and choose to call. On the flop, the board reads Ace, Ace, King and I choose to check. This strategy is called ___-playing.

Answer: slow

Slow-playing aims to deceive your opponents into thinking you have a weak hand, when in fact you hold a powerhouse hand. In the above example, you do not want to scare people out of the pot because there is little chance that anyone will outdraw you to gain a better hand.

A player who is slow-playing usually waits to the turn or the river to bet or raise with larger amounts of money. I find that the best poker players are those who are able to vary their bets and keep their opponents guessing as to what hand they have.
8. Which of the following terms refers to an inside straight draw?

Answer: Gutshot

My experiences show that gutshot straight draws are hard to hit in a game of poker. When the bets become higher, the less willing I would be to play with this kind of straight draw.
An inside straight draw occurs when only one card can complete the straight (eg. 45_78, needs a 6 for the straight). This inside straight draw can be referred to as a 'Belly Buster' as well as a 'Gutshot.' 'Huey, Dewey and Louie' refer to three of a kind, deuces. 'Slot Machine' refers to three of a kind, sevens. The 'Wheel' refers to a straight, ace to five.
9. I am dealt the 'ladies' and become quite excited. Which of the following hands would have a greater chance of beating my hand before the flop is dealt?

Answer: King Kong

The 'ladies' represent Pocket Queens. 'King Kong' (Pocket Kings) would be the only hand favoured to beat the Queens. 'Fishhooks' (Pocket Jacks) would have a much better chance than 'Computer Hand' (Q,7) and 'Bomber' (5,2) that are rank underdogs to defeat the Queens. Needless to say, in one night I was dealt the 'ladies' twice and was beaten on both occasions by J,10 and 5,5 (both of which produced straights on the river)!
10. Which player, born in Canada and nicknamed 'Kid Poker,' won the Poker Player of the Year award in 2004?

Answer: Daniel Negreanu

Born in 1974, Negreanu dropped out of high school one credit short of graduation to follow his aspiration of becoming a professional poker player. He was named the Player of the Year in 2004 after winning two World Poker Tour titles and one World Series of Poker bracelet. He won the first World Series of Poker event he entered at the age of 23.
