Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Players selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame are generally selected by the position they played in their careers. Who was the first player in the HOF who, although elected as a 3rd baseman (792 games), played more games in his career as a designated hitter (1174 games)?

Answer: Paul Molitor

Paul Molitor played most of the infield positions and in the outfield, but because of injuries, much of his success came as a DH. Playing with the Brewers, Blue Jays, and Twins,Paul was inducted in 2004.
2. In order to be selected for the HOF, a player must be on 75% of the ballots. Between 1901 and 2000, how many players were elected with 100% of the ballots in the of Major League baseball?

Answer: 0

From 1901-2000, nobody had the bragging rights to this. Tom Seaver made it in with 99 percent, as did Nolan Ryan in 1999.
3. Between 1935 and 2000, what franchise in baseball history produced the most HOF members during those 65 years?

Answer: Giants

The tally was Giants 23, Cardinals 16, Yankees 15, and the Cubs 14.
4. Most fans know that Jackie Robinson was the first African/American to play Major League baseball with the Dodgers in the National League. However, who was the first African/American who played in the American League, and later was also elected to Hall of Fame?

Answer: Larry Doby

Larry Doby came up with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. Doby played 13 seasons with a lifetime batting average of .283, 253 home runs, and five years he had 100 plus RBIs. His entry to the HOF was not until 1998 when he was selected by the HOF Veterans Committee.
5. Players have been selected at a special HOF election rather than the yearly ballot. Which of the following were two players elected to the HOF under these circumstances?

Answer: Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig

Lou Gehrig's early death and Clemente's tragic plane clash on a humanitarian mission led the HOF to modify their rules. In perpective, both were good bets for first ballot induction.
6. The State of Idaho claimed their first Hall of Famer who had a career mostly with the Minnesota Twins. Sportscasters and sportswriters nicknamed him "The Beerslayer", and to his teammates he was just "The Killer".

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

Although he had only a lifetime batting average of .256, Killebrew hit 573 home runs and batted in 1559 runs. He accumulated 13 All-Star selections and one American League MVP in 1969.
7. In what year did the HOF begin to induct members?

Answer: 1936

In 1936, the first five inductees were Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson.
8. In 1937, three more players were added to the Hall of Fame list. Which of the following was not elected that year?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby is regarded as one of the best, if not the best second baseman in baseball history. He was selected in the 1942 election.
9. Which of these Hall of Famers was elected by the Veterans Committee in 1994?

Answer: Phil Rizzuto

Phil Rizzuto was elected, as was Larry Doby later, by the Veterans Committee. The Veterans Committee consists of all living members of the HOF. They vote only every two years on players who were not selected in the regular process. Many elections go without any new inductees. The other three were inducted by the yearly ballot. Feller in 1962, Musial in 1969, and Berra in 1972.
10. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is ineligible for the HOF due to his alleged involvement in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. However, the HOF Museum does have a display. What is it?

Answer: Joe Jackson's shoes

It is ironic that the HOF has a display of Jackson's shoes. Jackson's role in the Black Sox Scandal has always been in dispute. Jackson had the highest batting average in the series (.375) of both teams. He led his team in RBIs and hit the only Sox home run of the series.

The most damning charge was that the Reds hit seven triples during the series. Records are not clear how many of these went to left field.
