Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these important characters from "Elizabeth" does not reappear in the sequel?

Answer: Robert Dudley

Altough vital to the first movie, Robert does not make an appearance in "The Golden Age". However, Elizabeth's friend and advisor, Walsingham, comes back to help her fend off conspirators, her brother-in-law Philip returns to get revenge on her for refusing his suit, and of course, Elizabeth herself returns.
2. While imprisoned in England, Mary Queen of Scots tells her jailer that she prays for who?

Answer: Elizabeth I

It is near the middle of the movie, and Mary is imprisoned in a castle in the North of England, and Elizabeth has to figure out what to do with Mary, who might at any time incite rebellion. As Elizabeth debates what to do with her dangerous cousin, Mary tells her jailer that she prays for Elizabeth, in an effort to make herself seem like less of a threat.

Then, she asks him whether he thinks Elizabeth prays for her, too. It might have been an attempt to save herself, or just to stir up more trouble.
3. What does Sir Walter Raleigh NOT bring as a gift to Elizabeth from the New World?

Answer: Corn

Besides the plants and people of the Americas, Raleigh also brings tons of Spanish gold, stolen from Spanish ships along the way. Angered that Elizabeth would do nothing against obvious pirating, the Spanish Ambassador and his men storm from the room in fury.
4. What does Raleigh tell Elizabeth is very rare for a queen?

Answer: "Having someone like you for yourself."

This statement intrigues Elizabeth, who has had many relationships but realizes that it is difficult to tell who is only out for her favor for the wealth and power it will bring them, and who wants her friendship only because they like her as a person.
5. Which member of Sir Francis Walsingham's family betrays him?

Answer: His brother

Walsingham's brother intends to kill him, but Francis, suspecting what he is about to do, tells him a story about how sorry he is that he has not shown him more love, and is able to take the knife from him. His brother is locked up in the Tower, but eventually released to go back to Paris, where he had been living.
6. Who is the daughter of Philip II?

Answer: Isabella

Many times during the movie Isabella is shown walking with her father, and he always tells her how Elizabeth and England are evil. Once he even asks her if she would like to be Queen of England. She is often shown carrying a doll resembling Elizabeth I.
7. Sir Walter Raleigh starts a relationship with which of Elizabeth's maids of honor?

Answer: Bess Throckmorton

Bess is one of Elizabeth's favorite ladies, but she goes behind Elizabeth's back to have a secret affair with Raleigh. When Elizabeth finds out that Bess has become pregnant and has secretly married Raleigh, she screams at her and hits her and Walter, banishing Bess from court and imprisoning Walter until the threat of the Armada forces her to release him.
8. The English set fire to some of their ships and push them into the Spanish formation, wrecking most of the Armada's ships and helping the English win. What are these weapons called?

Answer: Fire Ships

Oil is poured all over the ships and everyone gets off, except for Raleigh, who lights the match. The fire ships crash into the Spanish warships and set them aflame, killing many of the Spaniards and destroying most of their boats. The vital crescent formation of the Armada is ruined by this, and the ships are scattered, giving the English their victory.
9. Why doesn't Elizabeth die when the Catholic conspirator shoots at her in church?

Answer: There is no bullet.

The conspirator does not know that his leader has purposely not put a bullet in the gun, so when he finally shoots nothing happens. The conspirators are supporters of Mary Queen of Scots, and the man thinks that killing her would make Mary Queen of England. However, the leader has other plans.
10. Despite Elizabeth's advanced age in this movie, she still has suitors. A young boy from a foreign country comes to England to try and woo her. Who is he?

Answer: Charles of Austria

Elizabeth agrees that Charles can come to England, but when he arrives he can speak no English, and he can only stutter rehearsed lines his interpreter has told him. Elizabeth takes pity on him and speaks to him in his native tongue and, learning that he is uncomfortable, allows him to leave.
11. Why is Elizabeth reluctant to sign Mary Stuart's death warrant?

Answer: She will be murdering a Queen.

Elizabeth feels that by letting a fellow queen go to her death, she will be setting an example. Since she is a queen too, she thinks that maybe she will be the next target. As Walsingham says, she is afraid to prove that queens, too, are "mortal".
12. When Bess and Walter dance the volta, Elizabeth sees what image from her past?

Answer: Herself dancing with Robert Dudley

As Bess and Walter clumsily try to master the steps of the dance, Elizabeth remembers for a moment how she had danced with Robert Dudley as a young girl, right before she became queen. She had done that very same dance with him more than once in "Elizabeth", and the love of the couple brings back bittersweet memories.
13. Elizabeth Throckmorton becomes very guilty about not having helped someone who had asked her for aid. Who is it that had asked for her help?

Answer: Her cousin

Bess's cousin pleads with her to put in a good word with the Queen, since he is a Papist and is in danger of his life but, fearful of the Queen's reaction if she heard that she had a Papist in the family, she refuses to help. Only days later, he is arrested and hung.
14. At the end of the movie, Bess finally delivers her baby. Which of these best describes it?

Answer: A healthy boy

Bess delivers a healthy boy, and Elizabeth tells Raleigh that he must be proud. Elizabeth holds the baby herself, and gives him her blessing, fully forgiving the parents for what they had done by secretly marrying.
15. Sadly, the movie does not have a completely happy end. Which main character dies of old age at the end of the movie?

Answer: Francis Walsingham

Walsingham, one of Elizabeth's greatest friends, supporters, and protectors, dies of very old age (old in that time, anyway), with his grieving family and queen looking on.
