Inspector/Captain Nash Bridges was the head of the Special Investigations Unit of the San Francisco Police Department. Alan Hale Jr., was the son of the great character actor of the 1930's and 1940's, Alan Hale Sr. Alan Hale Jr. appeared in over 200 motion pictures and television shows. In one of his early television roles, he portrayed the legendary train engineer in the 1957 series "Casey Jones". The series was about a frontier era steam engine train engineer who was also a dedicated husband and father. Casey traveled throughout the wild West, sitting behind the throttle of his #1 engine, called "The Cannonball Express". The series ran for one season.
Of his many roles, Hale will probably be best remembered as the pleasure boat captain, Jonas Grumby, or as he was always referred to "Skipper" on the 1964 series "Gilligan's Island". The series ran on network television for only three years, but was maintained through reruns and cable television, becoming one of the most popular syndicated series in the history of television. Millions have followed the exploits of the 'seven stranded castaways' over the years. The popular theme song identified the castaways as, "Gilligan, the skipper too, the millionaire, and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann."
At some point following the death of his father, Alan Hale Jr. dropped the "Jr." from his name, and was known professionally as Alan Hale.
After the completion of "Gilligan's Island" run, Hale was almost always seen in public wearing his familiar captains, or "skippers" hat, which became his trademark for the remainder of his life.

One of the regular comedy skits was expanded, and became the premise for the series "Mama's Family", which starred Vicki Lawrence as Thelma "Mama" Crowley-Harper.
