Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the major difference between crewel work and surface work embroidery?

Answer: The type of fiber used

The distinguishing difference between crewel work and surface work is the fibers used. Crewel work uses wool or wool-like fibers instead of cottons or silks. This is a line often blurred - I've done pieces listed as "crewel" that use six strand floss.
2. Drawn thread and pulled thread are the same.

Answer: False

Pulled thread work is exactly that - you pull the thread tight as you stitch.

In drawn thread, you remove section of the weft or warp threads from the fabric and create bars of needle weaving or just use a basic hem stitch.

Both are done using even weave fabric.
3. What is stumpwork?

Answer: A three dimensional form of embroidery

Wired, beaded, stuffed, padded - all these apply to stumpwork. This is a very old form where pieces are worked on a ground fabric, snipped out and arranged on a second fabric.
4. Which of these are used in gold work?

Answer: All of these

Goldwork is something I'm screwing up my courage to try. This needle art uses precious metal impregnated fibers to create ornate and sumptuous creations. Gold work is often seen on church vestments.
5. The most distinguishing feature of a penelope canvas is its weave.

Answer: True

Penelope canvas is a double weave canvas and the choice of hard core needlepoint fans.
6. Which technique involves adding mirrors to your work?

Answer: Shisha

Shisha involves adding mirrors to fabric via threads stitched over the edges of the mirror. This is very popular in Eastern areas. If you're a child of the 1960s or 1970s, you may have owned a skirt or wall hanging with shisha mirrors in it.
Sushi and shumai are foods, yummy. Shiatsu is a type of massage.
7. When is a laying tool used?

Answer: For all of these

Laying tools, in their many forms, are used to help make stitches lie flat or help fibers "behave". I use one when I'm making multiple French knots with a long thread.
8. Should a stitcher keep a stiletto among their tools?

Answer: Yes

Sometimes a stiletto is used to enlarge the ground fabric to make the passage of the needle and fiber easier. Gradually tapered ones are used to round up an eyelet. It can be used as a laying tool as well.
9. Why do stitchers have a bunka brush among their tools?

Answer: To raise the nap of speciality fibers

Don't you just love that name - and you use it to make furry fibers come to life.
10. You should have different scissors for different uses.

Answer: True

You should have many pairs of scissors - one for snipping metallic threads, another for hardanger and more as needed. Make sure you adorn them with identifiers as to use.
11. Why does a stitcher have emery among their stitching tools?

Answer: To sharpen, polish and clean needles and pins

A small bag filled with emery powder is among the most useful tools any stitcher can have. Keeping your needles smooth is critical to your stitching pleasure.

Traditionally the emery bag is in the shape of a strawberry.
12. What is a biscornu?

Answer: A French term used to describe an eight-cornered cushion

Biscornus are neat eight-cornered pillows that have captured the imagination of the many needle workers.

The shape comes from sewing two equal sized finished squares together catty corner.
13. What are embellishments?

Answer: any of these and more

Some people like to keep it simple when it comes to needlework. But others add beads, charms and buttons to their works. For these people the stitching is just the beginning.
14. A bit of irony, DMC color #666 is known as Christmas Red.

Answer: True

I'm not into Revelations, but I do wonder as 666 is my least favorite shade of the DMC Reds.
15. French Knots and Colonial knots are the same thing.

Answer: False

There is a difference in final knot size and shape. Many people find colonials easier, but practice makes prefect. Knotwork is making a comeback, so practice those knots.
