Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the early ancient Egyptians bury the dead?

Answer: in the desert

They buried the dead in small pits in the desert. Because it was so hot and dry, the bodies dehydrated, creating lifelike and natural 'mummies'.
2. Which organ was deliberately left in the body for the afterlife?

Answer: heart

The Egyptians believed the heart, not the brain, was the centre of intelligence and controlled the body.
3. Certain organs were saved in special containers. What were these containers called?

Answer: Canopic jars

The liver, lungs, stomach and intestines were removed, washed and dried out. They were then stored in canopic jars to keep them safe for the afterlife.
4. Did every corpse get mummified?

Answer: no

It was an honour to be mummified. Only rich people and royalty and assorted important persons were mummified.
5. What was used to wrap the body?

Answer: strips of linen

They usually started by wrapping the head and neck. Then fingers and toes were wrapped individually, followed by the arms, legs and torso.
6. What was placed between the layers of linen?

Answer: amulets

Common amulets were the 'Isis knot', the 'Djed' the 'Ankh' and the 'Plummet'
7. Why were amulets placed on the body?

Answer: for protection

The amulets were believed to protect the body on its journey into the afterlife.
8. Which organ did the Egyptians think was not important at all?

Answer: brain

They removed the brain by sticking a spike up the nose, swirling it around then pulling it out! Unlike many of the organs, the brain was thrown away.
9. During the mummification process the body was covered in natron. Why?

Answer: to dry it out

The body was covered in natron for 40 days. Afterwards, the skin was shrunken and leathery as it had dried so much.
10. Once bandaged, what was placed over the head of the mummy?

Answer: a mask

The mask was made to look like the dead person. This was so the spirit would recognise its own body in the afterlife.
