Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of 'Set In Darkness', Detective Inspector John Rebus found himself on a tour of a demolition site. The building had once been one of Edinburgh's grandest houses. It shared a name with a peer of the realm. What was it called?

Answer: Queensberry House

The house had been built in the 17th century and was extended after it came into the ownership of the 1st Duke of Queensberry. It was being demolished to make way for a wing of the new Scottish parliament. Rebus was on a committee assessing security implications of the new building. Rebus believed he was on the committee as his boss wanted to keep him out of trouble.
2. Detective Constable Siobhan Clarke did not get out much, socially. 'Set In Darkness' had her out at a singles party in a club. What was the name of the club?

Answer: The Marina Club

In fact, Clarke was working. She was in the company of a woman who had been raped after attending a singles night. Two other women had similar experiences and Clarke was with her to see if she could recognise her attacker from its male clientele.
3. A gathering took place in 'Set In Darkness' to celebrate the 75th birthday of a family matriarch. Cammo Grieve, the eldest son, was a Member of Parliament. Which party did he belong to?

Answer: Conservative

Cammo Grieve came from a political family, and while his father was a Liberal of the old school, the son had joined the Conservative Party while at university. He was an MP for a safe seat in England. He had been receiving death threats by letter, but put these down to "a crank". For those not familiar with British politics, yes, there was a Monster Raving Loony Party, though it lost some of its vibrancy following the death of its founder, Screaming Lord Sutch.
4. When police officers uncovered the body of a murder victim in 'Set In Darkness', they did not have too guess too hard at the identity. They recognised the victim straight away. Why?

Answer: It was the brother of a well-known MP

Roddie Grieve was the brother of an MP and had been a prospective candidate for the new Scottish parliament. He was found on a site that was being cleared for the new parliament building. The back of his head had been crushed. The Grieve family was well known in Edinburgh as 'the clan'.
5. The body count in 'Set In Darkness' continued to mount with a third victim apparently committing suicide. Where did it happen?

Answer: Waverley railway station

So many people had jumped from North Bridge into the cutting leading into the station that the Samarians had bolted a sign to the parapet. D/Con Siobhan Clarke was quickly on the scene after hearing the commotion as she walked home from a night out.
6. On the trail of a suicide victim in 'Set In Darkness', D/Con Siobhan Clarke visited an Edinburgh sporting club. Which sport did it cater for?

Answer: Bowls

A building society account book was found in a dead man's possessions. It showed a balance of £400,000. Clarke went to the bowls club to speak to the building society manager who had opened the account.
7. In 'Set In Darkness', D/Sgt Ellen Wylie and D/C Grant Hood were investigating the discovery of a body that had been hidden for some 20 years. Their enquiries brought up the spectre of an Edinburgh crime boss. What was his name?

Answer: Bryce Callan

Bryce Callan was a mythical figure in Edinburgh's gangland history, and had been the 'Mr Big' before Cafferty had come on the scene. It was suggested to the detectives the body might be that of someone who had fallen foul of Callan and his protection rackets
8. In 'Set in Darkness', Jerry Lister and Nic Hughes were lifelong friends. They had met in school and later, in middle age, liked to cruise together in Nic's car picking up and assaulting women. What had brought them together in the first place?

Answer: A love of music

Jerry was the follower and Nic the leader. Jerry was married, but unemployed. While his wife was out working he liked to pass time by listening to punk records from his youth. Together they would cruise the streets of Edinburgh looking for women to pick up and attack.
9. D/I John Rebus made a return visit in 'Set In Darkness' to a place he remembered from boyhood holidays. Where was it?

Answer: St Andrews

St Andrews - the home of golf - had been the destination for the Rebus family's two-week summer holiday each year. Rebus remembered nights playing cards and dominoes in a caravan and days spent walking - often in the rain.
10. For perhaps only the second or third time in his life John Rebus was left speechless by developments in 'Set In Darkness'. What caused this (temporary) aberration?

Answer: Morris 'Big Ger' Cafferty was out of prison

Cafferty was to Rebus what Moriarity was to Sherlock Holmes; a nemesis. Rebus had put him behind bars. Now Cafferty was out early - claiming a cancer diagnosis. Rebus was sure he was one of the scores Cafferty had to settle.
11. In 'Set In Darkness', John Rebus and Siobhan Clarke uncovered a link between a murder victim and a man who committed suicide. What was it?

Answer: They had been business partners

The man who jumped to his death had left a near-fortune in a building society account. He had been a property development partner of a brother of a murder victim. He and the partner had disappeared years before the events of 'Set in Darkness'.
12. D/Constable Siobhan Clarke discovered in 'Set In Darkness' that she had a stalker. Who was it?

Answer: Derek Linford

Clarke had gone out with D/I Derek Linford three times, before ending the relationship. He had taken to lurking in a building opposite her flat watching her. She found out, and challenged Linford about it in full view of other watching detectives in the CID office.
13. A rapist and his sidekick had a fall-out in 'Set In Darkness' and one ended up dead. What was the lethal weapon?

Answer: A pair of scissors

Nic Hughes and Jerry Larford made a good team. Hughes, the career man, was the rapist, while Jerry, the down-and-out unemployed loser, was his accomplice. Finding a policeman outside his office one afternoon, Nic believed his friend had informed on him and went to his flat with a knife.

In a fight that followed, Nic ended up dead, stabbed with a pair of scissors. Ironically, the cop's presence had nothing to do with the rapes.
14. 'In Set In Darkness', John Rebus lurked around a graveyard waiting for the missing son of a famous family to turn up. Alasdair Grieve had run away to the Caribbean. What had be been doing there?

Answer: Running a bar

Grieve could not help but come back for the funeral of his murdered brother, as John Rebus knew he would. Rebus had questions to ask about old business dealings, and murder.
15. As "Set In Darkness" reached its climax, Detective Inspector John Rebus found out who was behind the murder of a member of one of Edinburgh's leading families. He did not get to arrest him, though. Why not?

Answer: He was murdered

Barry Hutton had intended that Roddie Grieve should be taught a lesson, but the man he ordered to beat him up had gone too far. Hutton had built up a property empire, but others had greedy eyes on it. At a confrontation involving Hutton and Rebus on New Year's Eve.

The developer ended up dead. If you've read the book you'll know 'whodunit', if you want to find out, you'll have to read the book.
