Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original Andy Warhol "Factory" was called _______.

Answer: The Silver Factory

Andy Warhol's Factory was located in New York City, and was the place where his artwork was executed for much of his creative life. The Factory had several different locations during its history. The original Factory was informally called the Silver Factory because Warhol's friend, Billy Name, was asked to decorate it with a silver theme. For instance, at the art exhibit "Andy Warhol Live", I saw an old trunk that Billy had painted silver, that was used at the studio during this period. The trunk was attributed to Billy Name.
2. What was Andy Warhol's name at birth?

Answer: Andrew Warhola

Andy's parents were immigrants to the U.S. from what is now in an area in north eastern Slovakia. They were a middle class family, and Andy's father worked in a coal mine.
3. Although he worked in various media, Warhol's most familiar images to us are in which medium?

Answer: Silkscreen and lithography

When he had achieved some fame, Andy began to use silkscreen to create his art and to mass-produce images. By this method, he was able to create a way for viewers to see a soup can or a Brillo box as something more than it had been previously. A genius, was he.
4. The Factory became a meeting place for musicians. Which of these was a band that Andy encouraged and promoted?

Answer: The Velvet Underground

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground have Andy Warhol to thank for bringing them to prominence in the music and art world. After his death, they made an album for and about him.
5. After Andy's death, there was an album made, "Songs for Drella". This title referred to his music friends' nickname for him, which was a combination of what two names?

Answer: Dracula and Cinderella

After Andy's untimely death shortly after a simple operation, Lou Reed's band dedicated the "Songs for Drella" album to Andy, that he would never be forgotten. He won't be forgotten!
6. Many of Warhol's diverse friends that frequented his Factory and formed a kind "art assembly line" which was a new way that the Factory produced Andy's art. These assembly line helpers were known as:

Answer: Warhol Superstars

Many characters from various walks of life frequented the Factory, and, I believe, were happy and honored to be a part of a great artist's work. They included all kinds of people, from well-to-do rock stars to the poorest drug addicts. Andy helped out a lot of the less-fortunate.
7. Mick Jagger was a frequent visitor at the Factory, and the subject of a number of artworks by Warhol.

Answer: True

During his life, Warhol created many covers for albums, including The Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers". He also created several large silkscreens of Mick Jagger, and was close to Mick's wife, Jerry Hall.
8. A famous fixture at the Factory was a piece of furniture that had been found on a New York sidewalk. It appeared in many photographs and films made at the Factory. What was it?

Answer: A red couch

Billy Name found the couch on a sidewalk on 47th Street. The couch was in many photos, as well as Warhol films, and a magazine cover (much sought-after today). It became a well-known symbol of the Factory.
Once, while it was temporarily left on the sidewalk during a move, it was stolen. I wonder who has it today, and if they know its importance? Or is it at the dump?
9. In 1957 Warhol won the prestigious "Art Director's Club Medal" for what?

Answer: A shoe advertisement

Warhol went to New York City after earning a BFA degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, in 1949. Andy began designing in advertisements and went on to specialize in illustrating shoes. At this time, he also began to develop his Fine Art innovations.
10. In 1968, an actress and writer shot and almost killed Andy Warhol. Who was she?

Answer: Valerie Solanas

Solanas had wanted Warhol to produce a script she had written. When he continued to show no interest, she became angry and shot him. At least she got her "15 minutes of fame".
