1. "Beloved" is Toni Morrison's fifth novel. When was it written?

Answer: 1987

"Beloved" won the Pulitzer Prize. Morrison also received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She has also written some non-fiction works, including "The Dancing Mind".
2. Who is the character of Sethe based on?

Answer: Margaret Garner

According to Morrison's foreword in "Beloved", she saw Garner's story in a newspaper clipping, and deemed the character of Garner "confining" to a novelist.
3. The epigraph reads "I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved." Where in the Bible does this phrase appear?

Answer: Romans 9:25

Ezra 7:5 is "The son of A-bi-shu-a, the son of Phin-e-has, the son of El-e-a-zar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:"

"Beloved" was made into a major film in 1998 starring Oprah Winfrey as Sethe and Thandie Newton as Beloved.
6. Did Sethe murder her sons?

Answer: No

She did not kill them. In fact they both ran away by the time they were thirteen years old, as they were too scared to live at the home they thought was haunted by the dead baby. Buglar ran away after a mirror shattered when he looked into it, and the final straw for Howard was two tiny footprints appearing in a cake.
7. Why is Amy Denver going to Boston?

Answer: To get velvet.

Amy helps deliver Sethe's baby when she goes into labor not long after escaping the vicious Schoolteacher at Sweet Home. Sethe names the baby Denver after her.
8. What is Sethe's address during the novel?

Answer: 124 Bluestone Road

Sweet Home is where Sethe lived when she was a slave. 38 Maple Avenue I just made up.
9. What is the phrase Paul D repeats to himself when he sleeps with Beloved?

Answer: Red heart, red heart, red heart....

At first Paul D tried to send Beloved away. He first whispers "red heart" but ends up shouting very loud and wakes up Denver.
10. What is the last sentence of the novel?

Answer: Beloved.

All four phrases are in the last section of the novel, but "Beloved." is how the story ends.
