Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character shared a name with a territory in Canada?

Answer: Yukon Cornelius

Yukon Cornelius was the gruff, old, red-bearded prospector who befriended Rudolph. His gruff exterior is illustrated when he observes "Even among Misfits, your misfits" upon meeting the rejected toys. He lends a hand in reforming the Abominable Snow-Monster.

(By the way, neither Newfoundland, Alberta nor Saskatchewan are Canadian territories!)
2. For what reason did the Jack-in-the-Box find himself on the Island of Misfit Toys?

Answer: His name was Charlie

Aww, poor Charlie-in-the-Box! He was a prominent toy on the Island and dubbed himself "the Official Sentry of the Island of Misfit Toys". At the end of the show Santa picks him up along with the other Misfits to find loving homes on Christmas.
3. Which of the eight fabled reindeer is identified as Rudolph's father in the TV special?

Answer: Donner

"His beak blinks like a blinkin' beacon!" are some of father Donner's first words upon seeing his little son. Rudolph's mother's name is never identified but fellow reindeer Comet has a cameo as the coach of the reindeer squad.
4. The voice of Rudolph was provided by Canadian voice actor named Billy Richards.

Answer: True

Canadian voice actress Billy Mae Richards provided the legendary voice though she was strangely credited with the gender neutral name Billy Richards.

Richards' career included voice work for TV shows such as 'Spiderman' and 'The Care Bears'.
5. Which of the following songs is NOT heard in the television special?

Answer: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Songwriter Johnny Marks is responsible for the tunes in the Rudolph Christmas special but Santa Claus is Coming to Town is not one of them. Marks' works also include the title song "Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer", "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (the Brenda Lee hit from 1958) and "Jingle, Jingle, Jingle".

Man, the guy must have really liked Christmas!
6. What noble profession does Hermey the Misfit Elf aspire to?

Answer: Dentistry

Unhappy with his lot in life as one of Kris Kringle's elves, Hermie wants to break out of the mold and pursue a career in dentistry. Chided by his superior and fellow elves for his choice, his amateur skills end up helping when Hermie removes the teeth of the "Bumble" Abominable Snow-Man.
7. What type of animal is King Moonracer - the ruler of the Island of Misfit Toys?

Answer: Lion

As the title "king" denotes Moonracer is a crowned lion. His job appears to be flying around the world and rounding up all of the misfit toys to provide them with a home on his island.
8. What fictional setting does Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer take place in - as described by Sam the Snowman (Burl Ives)?

Answer: Christmastown (the North Pole)

The narrator briefly describes the mythical village who's "number one citizens are the Clauses". The whole story of Rudolph is told in retrospect at a time when Christmas almost never happened.

The original TV special (you might recall) begins with live action footage of a blizzard to set the stage.
9. What Biblical character is mentioned in the song "silver and gold" as sang by Burl Ives?

Answer: Mary

Ives, as Sam the Snowman, chimes into the classic song when he feels that Yukon Cornelius is out prospecting for the precious metals. (It is later revealed that Yukon is seeking peppermint!).

Written by Johnny Marks "Silver and Gold" includes the lyrics:

"Wise men brought gifts to the mange I'm told
Mary was humble to see
Shepherds and kings there on bended knees
It's silver and gold, silver and gold"
10. What is the name of Rudolph's girlfriend? (Note: She is the only creature who does not deride him for his glowing schnozz.)

Answer: Clarice

Clarice cheers up her beau with the song "There's Always Tomorrow" and was voiced by Janet Orenstein.
