1. Northern Ireland consists of six of the nine counties of the Province of Ulster. What are the other three counties?

Answer: Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan

Northern Ireland was created as a division of the United Kingdom on 3rd May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1920. It is found to the northeast of Ireland. Northern Ireland is home to the oldest whiskey distillery in the world, Bushmills, which was built in 1608.
2. Lough Neagh is a freshwater lake. Which county does not border it?

Answer: Fermanagh

County Fermanagh is home to Upper and Lower Lough Erne. An important attraction in County Fermanagh is the Marble Arch Caves, through which one can take a short boat trip to see the stalactites. The county town is Enniskillen.
3. What currency is used in Northern Ireland?

Answer: Pound Sterling

The punt was the currency of the Republic of Ireland until it changed to the Euro in 1998. As Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, it uses the British currency.
4. Giant's Causeway is composed of what type of rock?

Answer: Basalt

The Giant's Causeway is composed of cylindrical columns of basalt and is a site of international significance. Legend has it that it was formed by Finn McCool, a local giant who wanted to cross to Scotland. The reality is that it resulted from the cooling of volcanic rock.
5. Londonderry's Anglican Cathedral is dedicated to a saint. Which one is it?

Answer: Saint Columba

Saint Columba founded a Christian settlement in Londonderry in the 6th century. The Cathedral was completed in 1633. The city of Londonderry was built around that settlement and was surrounded by ramparts for protection. The ramparts have remained and are locally known as "Derry's Walls".
6. What ill-fated ship was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland?

Answer: Titanic

The Titanic, built by Harland and Wolff, sank on her maiden voyage on 15th April 1912. It took three years to build the ship, and cost about seven and a half million dollars. A blockbuster film was made about the disaster in 1997, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
7. The Mourne Mountains dip down to the sea at Newcastle, but what is their highest peak?

Answer: Slieve Donard

Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland at 852m (2795 ft). It was named in honor Saint Domangart. The peak is composed of granite. Near the top of Slieve Donard is the Silent Valley Reservoir which supplies water to Belfast and parts of County Down.

Mount Brandon is in County Kerry; Errigal in Donegal; and Snaefell is in the Isle of Man.
8. What is Lough Neagh's area in square miles?

Answer: 151 sq.miles

Lough Neagh is the biggest freshwater lake in the UK. It provides the water supply for a great part of Northern Ireland. On the shores of the Lough is the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, which offers many exhibitions, birdwatching opportunities and walks. The Lough is also home to a great variety of waterfowl.
9. County Fermanagh is home to world-renowned pottery. What is it called?

Answer: Belleek

Belleek has been producing fine pottery since 1858. It is particularly noted for its basketware, of which each piece is individually made by hand. The village of Belleek is on the border between Co.Fermanagh and the Republic of Ireland. In fact, some of the properties are in both countries.

It is said that a husband and wife, while sharing the same bed in the same house, can be sleeping in different countries! I can't vouch for the truth of that!
10. What river runs through Belfast?

Answer: Lagan

The Liffey runs through Dublin. The Shannon is the longest river in Ireland at 240 miles. The Bann rises in County Down, runs through Lough Neagh, then north into the Atlantic Ocean. County Down Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland. The name Belfast comes from a Gaelic word meaning 'the mouth on the sandy banks'.
