Answer: Elephants

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the elephant is only just visible in this picture - its trunk. The trunk is an elongated nose, although the elephant uses it for much more than just smelling. It drinks by sucking water up into its trunk, then squirting it into its mouth. Or if it is a hot day, it can cool down by squirting the water over its back.

It can also use the trunk as an eating tool, to pick up food or pull it down from trees.

Answer: Sheep

Sheep are one of the most common farm animals, and can be found all over the world. Their fleece, which is usually shorn once a year, is warm and hard-wearing, making it popular for the manufacture of clothing. In some parts of the world they are also kept for their milk, which can be drunk fresh or made into cheese.

Answer: Cow

The most common breed of cow seen on farms in Great Britain and North America is the black-and-white Holstein or Friesian. The brown-and-white cow in this picture is an Ayrshire, which is another popular dairy variety.

Answer: Pigs

It is sometimes said that you can eat every part of the pig apart from the squeal. This is reflected in the different names for the various forms of meat - not only pork, but gammon, bacon and ham. It is also a common ingredient in sausages. The Muslim religion, however, forbids the eating of any pig products.

Answer: Zebra

The black-and white stripes of the zebra act as camouflage, making it hard for predators, such as lions, to pick them out when they are standing still. When travelling in herds, their stripes also make it difficult for a predator to pick out a single individual to attack. Each zebra's pattern of stripes is unique, just like a human's fingerprints.

One other animal that looks a bit like a zebra from behind is an okapi, which has similar stripes on its rump and legs, but a plain brown body. But this is definitely a zebra!

Answer: Horse

It is believed that the first wild horses were domesticated by humans over 6000 years ago. The only true breed of wild horse that still survives is the Przewalski's Horse, which is native to parts of China and Mongolia. It is generally unwise to approach a horse from the rear, as it can kick hard with its rear legs if frightened.

Answer: Giraffes

Giraffes are the tallest living land mammals, with adult males normally standing between 14 and 17 feet tall. Their height is very useful when eating, as they are able to reach twigs and leaves that other animals with similar diets cannot reach.

Answer: Deer

The species in this picture is a whitetail deer. The reason for the name becomes more obvious when the animal is frightened, when it raises its tail in the air as a danger signal, showing the white hairs underneath.

Answer: Brown Bear

There are several species of brown bear, including the Grizzly bear and the larger Kodiak bear, both found in areas of North America. A further variety, the Eurasian brown bear, is found in parts of Europe and Siberia. If coming across one from behind, my best advice would be to back away slowly and quietly before it sees or smells you.

Answer: Alpaca

Like many animals which have been farmed by humans for thousands of years, alpacas no longer exist in the wild, but are only found as a domesticated species. Their hair grows thickly all over their body, including their legs and head, giving them a rather comical appearance.
