Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just where is the Kingdom of Landover located, anyway?

Answer: Near Waynesboro, Virginia

To get to the kingdom, head north on Skyline Drive from Waynesboro, Virginia about twenty miles, until you see a small green sign with the number 13 lettered in black, a weather shelter and a telephone. It's right up in the woods at the end of the trail - if you're allowed to find it, that is.
2. "A Princess of Landover" starts with Princess Mistaya being suspended from Carrington Women's Preparatory School for scaring student, Rhonda Masterson, half to death. What did Misty do that was so frightening?

Answer: Conjured up an image of Strabo the dragon

Mistaya's parents thought it would be good for her to experience the outside world and be around girls her own age, so they sent her to a New England prep school. Misty, however, wanted to do it on her own terms. The incident with Rhonda Masterson was the third strike against her.

She had flaunted school regulations twice previously and didn't seem to be learning from her transgressions, so Ms Appleton suspended her until she could behave in a manner appropriate for Carrington's.
3. Upon returning to Landover, Mistaya was immediately accosted by Strabo the dragon. What was his reaction to her return?

Answer: He was irate about her behavior

Strabo knew she had conjured an image of him to scare Rhonda Masterson. He lectured her about creating an image of him without his consent. He considered it very bad manners and informed her that "labeling dragons as scary monsters is way out of line." He reaffirmed his affection for her and her mother and informed her that she would do well not to take after her father.
4. Who decided to marry Mistaya, even if she didn't want to marry him?

Answer: Berwyn Laphroig

Laphroig was the second son of Kallendbor, the Lord of Rhyndweir. After Kallendbor's demise while siding with the evil witch Nightshade, his oldest son became the head of the feudal barony. He died under mysterious circumstances and Laphroig assumed the title. A younger brother disappeared. People didn't seem to last long around Laphroig. When Laphroig told Ben Holiday, the king and Mistaya's father, that he wanted to court her for the purpose of marrying her, Ben was silently aghast, but under the law of the kingdom, it was permissible.
5. Mistaya had a magical creature bound to her as long as she spoke its name every day. What kind of magical creature was it?

Answer: A mud puppy

The Earth Mother gave a mud puppy, named Haltwhistle, to Mistaya, knowing she would have need of its magical abilities. As long as Misty spoke his name each day, he would be watching over her. If she missed a day, Haltwhistle would go back to the Earth Mother. A mud puppy is an odd looking creature, sort of an amphibian beagle.
6. Questor Thews, the court wizard, and Abernathy, the court scribe, thought that Mistaya's time might be well occupied by going to the castle Libiris and reorganizing the realm's books of history and magic. Unbeknownst to them, who was still living there?

Answer: Craswell Crabbit

Craswell Crabbit was a wizard of great power and ambition. Crabbit had been exiled to Libiris by the last real king before Ben Holiday. He had been biding his time there, waiting for some event that would propel him back into the royal court. He was quite full of himself and demanded to be called "His Eminence".
7. Working in the stacks of the library, Mistaya heard someone crying for help. Who was it?

Answer: Libiris

Libiris was made from some of the materials used to build Sterling Silver, the main castle of the realm. Being infused with fairy magic, Sterling Silver was sentient and took care of itself and provided for the royal family. Some, but not enough, of Sterling Sliver's building materials were used in Libiris, so it was self-aware but could not care for itself. Crabbit had made a deal with the demons of Abaddon to give them books of magic so they could learn conjuring to escape being locked in their realm.

A hole was cut in Libiris' wall to take the books to the demons, who dwelled beneath Landover and were kept there by wards of magic. Libiris could not heal the gash herself and called out to others to help her.
8. On her trip from home to visit her grandfather, Mistaya met a magical creature named Edgewood Dirk. What kind of creature was he?

Answer: Prism cat

Prism cats were fairy creatures of great magical power. Edgewood Dirk used his powers to shield Mistaya from the Landsview device as they journeyed to Libiris. He always had his own agenda, about which he seldom gave a hint. Though he thought himself aloof and inscrutable, he was really quite mouthy, wasn't he?
9. Who did Thom, Crabbit's indentured servant, turn out to be?

Answer: Laphroig's brother

Thom (Andjen Thomlinson) was Laphroig's younger brother, who disappeared when Laphroig became Lord of Rhyndweir. Fearing for his life, he ran away and ended up at Libiris. Crabbit agreed to hide him for five years in return for his services reorganizing the library. In reality, Crabbit was keeping him there until he could barter Thom for some advantage.
10. Where did Crabbit and Pinch end up after Haltwhistle diverted Crabbit's magic?

Answer: A zoo in Seattle, Washington

In the climatic scene, Mistaya and Crabbit fired their magic at each other, Pinch released a bolt from his crossbow and Laphroig threw his dagger. Haltwhistle, waiting nearby, neutralized the weapons and turned the magic against Mistaya's adversaries. Laphroig was turned to stone and Crabbit and Pinch were transported to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington.

It was the same place Haltwhistle had sent Nightshade five years earlier. As zoo security personnel removed Crabbit and Pinch from the aviary, the crow, Nightshade, escaped through the open door.
