Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These oriental cats featured in the 1955 Walt Disney animated film, "Lady and the Tramp". Can you tell which cat breed they are from the photo shown?

Answer: Siamese

Originating in Thailand, formerly known as Siam, the Siamese cat has very distinctive facial features and an affectionate personality. It has short hair with a muscular body and slightly elongated face. Kittens are born white or cream and they develop colour "points" as they grow older.

These help distinguish whether they are seal point, chocolate point, lilac point, tortie point, red point or blue point. Who could forget the two troublesome cats singing the "Siamese Cat Song" in the film, "The Lady and the Tramp"?
2. These cats are very affectionate and become limp when they are picked up, hence the name they are given. What breed of cat are they?

Answer: Ragdoll

Ragdolls are believed to be the largest of domesticated cats. They have semi-long haired fur and they feature prominent facial features with blue eyes. Their fur can include seal, blue, chocolate, and lilac point colours. First registered in America in 1971 by breeder Ann Baker, they have become popular pets around the world. If you want an affectionate and docile lap cat then this is the best for you.
3. "Yes, comrade! These cats may run loose around the Kremlin at night when they are catching mice". Which breed would they be?

Answer: Russian blue

With green eyes and silvery-blue coats, the Russian blue is believed to have originated from Arkhangelsk, a sea port on the north-west coast of Russia near the Arctic Circle. They were given the alternative name of Archangel because of their origins. Sailors from the port transported the cats to other parts of Europe where they became popular to breeders, but it was not until the early 1900s when they reached America.

These cats were imported from Scandinavian countries and England.
4. These unusual cats originated on the Isle of Man. In some places, they have been given the nickname stumpy and rumpy, which may give a clue as to their real identity. What are they?

Answer: Manx

Nobody knows for certain why the Manx cat is tail-less, or where they originated from. These cats were known to roam the Isle of Man for several hundred years, although numbers have declined since. They resemble British Shorthairs apart from the lack of tail. Manx with no tail are called "rumpy", whereas Manx with a slight visible short stump is called a "stumpy".
5. These beautiful fluffy long haired cats have endearingly squashed muzzles and a big personality. Which cat is this from the picture shown?

Answer: Persian

It is believed that these cats originated from Persia (Iran) and then made their way to Europe and other countries. Legend says that a wizard created the Persian cat out of a curl of grey smoke, the shimmer from two stars, and a sparkle which jumped out of a fire.

In real life, these long haired cats with short legs are very sociable animals but need a lot of maintenance due to daily grooming.
6. With round faces and ears bending forward, these cats were named after a location in Europe. Can you guess which cat it is?

Answer: Scottish fold

The first Scottish fold cat was discovered in 1961 at a remote farm in Scotland. Susie, as she was better known, had two kittens, and the female of these bore a son which was later bred with a British shorthair. That was the start of a breeding programme which would have far reaches worldwide. A dominant gene mutation means that the cartilage within their ear contains a permanent fold.
7. Some people cringe when they look at these furless cats, but they are extremely cuddly and affectionate. Which breed of cat is it?

Answer: Sphynx

The sphynx cat has been documented in various parts of the world, but it was in Canada during 1966 when a black and white domestic shorthair gave birth to a litter, including a hairless cat they named Prune. These were then bred and the sphynx has been popping up in several countries ever since.

Their sturdy bodies with slightly protruding abdomen are completely hairless, apart from some having partial whiskers. Specially designed clothes can be purchased to keep them warm.
8. Some people may be shocked to see a small wild cat in their house but this breed is fully domesticated. Can you guess which cat it is?

Answer: Bengal

The Bengal is a cross between a domestic cat and an Asian leopard. It looks wild but it has a gentle nature, often very vocal and they love nothing better than to play in water. Their distinctive black markings are spotted or marbled on a background of brown, with a pale underbelly. Some cats appear to have gold glitter sprinkled on their fur.
9. This relatively new breed of cat with abnormally short legs was named after a character in the 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz". What is it called?

Answer: Munchkin

The munchkin descends from two short legged cats called Blackberry and Toulouse who lived in Louisiana. They were bred during the late 1980s although there was much controversy as many believed the breed would encounter back and leg problems. Although having short legs, they run around and play like many normal cats and are very affectionate and people loving.
10. This quiz would not be the same without introducing one of my own cats. Moe is just over a year old at the time of writing this quiz, very timid of strangers, but hugely lovable at the same time. What sort of cat is he?

Answer: Domestic shorthair

Domestic shorthair, or moggies/non-pedigree as they are commonly known, is the most common breed of cat in many countries. Their mixed heritage gives them a host of quirky traits and their independence is much favoured by their owners, especially those who work. Moe, and his brothers Mouse and Mr Magoo, were adopted from an animal shelter called Katz Castle and are very much loved by player Plodd!
