Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2009, which daily newspaper sold the most copies in the UK?

Answer: The Sun

In January 2009, the Sun was selling 3.1 million copies per day. The Daily Mail was the second-highest selling paper, with 2.2 million, then the Mirror on 1.4 million. The Star was way behind on only 770,000 sales. The Metro had a higher print circulation than any of them, but it was a free paper given away for nothing at railways stations and elsewhere.

During the 2020s many UK newspapers stopped publishing their circulation figures, so it stopped being possible to make accurate comparisons, although the Daily Mail is believed to have overtaken the Sun by 2020.
2. Which UK newspaper is the oldest surviving daily newspaper in the world?

Answer: Belfast News Letter

The News Letter was established in 1737. The more famous Times was first published as the 'Daily Universal Register' in 1785, and was followed by the Observer (the world's oldest Sunday paper) in 1791. The weekly Worcester Journal is the longest-established newspaper in the world, first published as the Worcester Postman in 1690.
3. Which national newspaper was based in Manchester - and had Manchester in its title - until 1959?

Answer: The Guardian

The liberal broadsheet was originally the 'Manchester Guardian', which moved down to London in an attempt to increase its circulation. Its Northern edition is still printed in Manchester. The Daily Express was also originally published from Manchester, but the city's most famous paper today is the local 'Manchester Evening News'.
4. Around which London street were most national papers based until the 1990s?

Answer: Fleet Street

Fleet Street has been a centre of publishing since the 16th century. From the 1700s, it grew into the centre of newspaper publishing, and it is still a synonym for the national UK papers.
5. Which London evening newspaper is more widely read than several national morning papers?

Answer: Evening Standard

The extremely successful Evening Standard is available across a huge region around London, and since 2009 has been available free, which has not surprisingly increased its circulation significantly. Over the years, it has swallowed up or put out of business all its competitors, including the Evening News.
6. Which unpopular national daily paper is published by the Communist Party?

Answer: Morning Star

All of the options are less well-known daily newspapers. The Metro is a free paper available in major cities in the UK. The Voice is aimed at Britain's black community, and the Racing Post, like its name suggests, has all the horse racing details.
7. Which of these newspapers is widely available in Wales?

Answer: Western Mail

The Western Mail is published in Cardiff and describes itself as the "national newspaper of Wales". The Herald and the Daily Record are both published in Glasgow, while the Scotsman is from Edinburgh. For many years, the Daily Record sold more copies in Scotland than any UK-wide newspaper did.
8. Which national daily is famously printed on 'pink' paper?

Answer: Financial Times

As its name suggests, the Financial Times focuses on business economics, though it also provides extensive coverage of a wide range of political and other areas. Its salmon-pink paper is one of the cheapest and subtlest ways ever thought up to make a product stand out from the crowd.
9. Which of the following at one time owned the UK newspapers the "Sun" and the "Times", as well as Sky television?

Answer: Rupert Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch, most famous in the US as the owner of Fox, became one of the more controversial newspaper owners in the UK. He introduced topless 'page 3' models in the "Sun", destroyed the power of the press unions, and fought hard to make his media empire successful.
10. Which of these Sunday newspapers is *not* closely linked with a daily paper?

Answer: The People

"The People" is owned by Trinity Mirror, but is not closely linked with a daily newspaper. It once had a circulation of more than five million copies an issue. "The Sun on Sunday" was launched in 2012 as a Sunday partner to the "Sun", replacing the defunct News of the World, which had been closed by its owner, Rupert Murdoch, following its implication in a serious phone-hacking scandal. "The Observer", which was nearly closed in 2009, is linked with the "Guardian", and the "Sunday Sport", which once reported that a double decker bus had been found frozen in Antarctica, is linked with the little-known "Daily Sport".
