Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is one purpose of a metal curry comb?

Answer: To clean the body brush

The metal curry comb should never be used directly on sensitive areas of the horse.
2. What would it mean to ride "shoulder in"

Answer: The horse is bent around the inside leg of the rider

The outside shoulder should be in front of the inside hind quarter and the inside legs pass in front of the outside legs.
3. True or false, an old fashioned method for curing a rearer was to break a bottle over its head when it reared?

Answer: True

There were other brutal methods for curing rearing, such as burning their chestnuts with a hot poker!
4. What is meant by flagging?

Answer: Excessive tail use to indicate pain

Horses used to be quite commonly docked in Britain, usually because that was the fashion of the time. It is rarely seen now.
5. What is a wisp primarily used for?

Answer: A massage of the horse

A wisp is a woven rope of hay and straw that can be used to massage the horse. It will improve the circulation and develop and harden muscles.
6. How many brushes, not counting the curry comb, are there in a standard grooming kit?

Answer: 3

The dandy brush is used for removing dried mud and stable stains, the body brush is used for removing dust and grease from the horse's coat and skin, and the water brush gives the mane and tail a nice finishing touch. Another brush used is the hoof oil brush, this isn't used to brush the horse but to apply hoof oil, so I have not included it in the question.
7. If a horse is said to bolt, what would it be doing?

Answer: Galloping out of control

Bolting can be a serious vice in horses but most are controllable if you are a competent rider. One good method is to turn them in circles, this prevents them from galloping.

9. What does it mean to ride on a loose rein?

Answer: The reins do not tug on the bit

After exercising your horse, you should always ride them on a loose rein for about 10 minutes before finishing your ride. This allows your horse to stretch his neck muscles and cool down.

Answer: A conformation fault

A ewe neck means that the crest of the neck is concave where it should be convex.
11. What is the purpose of a breast plate?

Answer: To prevent the saddle from slipping back

Breastplates are very useful when riding in hilly places, especially on a broad-backed horse!
12. What does it mean if a horse is said to nap?

Answer: It behaves badly

A horse can nap for different reasons, it can be because they don't want to leave the stables or a field mate, it can even be caused by ill fitting tack. When a horse naps he will do a variety of things including swinging his quarters, reversing, spinning around or just refusing to move.

The allergy to midges causes the horse to rub its mane and tail to get rid of the irritation.
18. How many fingers width should you be able to fit under a horse's cavesson noseband when he is tacked up for hacking?

Answer: 2 or 3

It is important that tack fits properly. If it does not the horse may be in pain and misbehave simply to get away from the discomfort.
