Merrylegs was the pony that the children of Squire Gordon, Miss Jessie and Flora, used to ride. Rob Roy was Black Beauty's brother who was shot after breaking his leg on a hunt. Sir Oliver was a retired hunter, and Ginger was a chestnut mare that Beauty used to work with.

Rueben Smith used to like a lot to drink. One evening he rode Beauty while he was drunk without realising a horseshoe had come off.
