Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Technically, bamboo is classified as what type of plant?

Answer: A Grass

Bamboos belong to the taxonomic family Gramineae (grasses), sub-family Bambusoideae (bamboo). Just imagine, 40 metre-tall grass!
2. Which continent is home to most of the world's bamboo?

Answer: Asia

Bamboo grows on all the world's continents with the exception of Antarctica, and will flourish in areas with as little as 750 or as great as 6000 millimetres of annual rainfall. They also seem unconcerned by altitude, with some species being found 4000 metres above sea level, in the Andes and Himalayas.
3. Bamboo is known for its incredibly fast growth. How fast was the Japanese Madake variety 'timed' at growing in one day?

Answer: 1.21 metres

The Madake (Phyllostachys edulis) only flowers once every 120 years, and then goes to seed and dies.
4. There are two main subgroups of the almost 2000 known species of bamboo. One is the 'herbaceous' type, but what is the other, better-known group known as?

Answer: Woody

Herbaceous bamboos resemble grass, and do not attain the lofty heights gained by their 'woody' cousins.
5. What name is given to the main stalk of a bamboo plant?

Answer: Culm

A rhizome is the root system of the plant, a turion is a baby bamboo shoot as it comes out of the ground and a sulcus is the small groove that runs along the stem in some species. The culm is also known as the cane.
6. What name is given to bamboo in Hawaii?

Answer: `Ohe

Thought to have come to the islands via Tahiti, the Hawaiian bamboo has a vast range of uses. These can range from making irrigation troughs, musical instruments, jewellery, fishing rods and even paper.
7. Which of these statements is NOT true about bamboo?

Answer: Filipino warriors used the boiled rootstock in poison darts

Various parts of the bamboo have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. The boiled and ground rhizomes are used as a poultice for wounds. Pound for pound, bamboo is stronger than steel, and many buildings in Hong Kong use bamboo foundations. For reasons that are not understood, all shoots from the same root will flower together, no matter where in the world they may be.
8. True or False. The Giant Panda feasts exclusively on one type of bamboo (the umbrella bamboo).

Answer: False

Pandas will eat any of over 20 different types of bamboo. Bamboo is low in nutrients, therefore they have to eat an awful lot (about 40 kilograms) each day to get a decent feed. Pandas will also eat rats, mice, pikas (an animal similar to a rabbit), insects and other vegetation.
9. Bamboo shoots as food have been part of the Asian diet for centuries, and are fast becoming popular in Western meals. Why are the shoots boiled before consumption?

Answer: Because they are poisonous

The raw shoots contain hydrocyanic acid, and are very toxic. Peeling and boiling for five minutes will steam off the acid. Bamboo shoots do not have much nutritional value (most of the 'healthy' stuff is boiled off with the toxins), but they are yummy in stir-frys.
10. True or False. Rattan is a species of bamboo.

Answer: False

Rattan is a type of climbing palm. Although they look similar to bamboo, a rattan pole is solid, not hollow. Rattan is used extensively in the cane furniture business, and major producers are Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia.
