For all those who are not familiar with New York, the Petries lived in Westchester County which is north of Manhattan, in the city of New Rochelle (which happens to be a real place). "The Dick Van Dyke Show" ran from 1961 through 1966 and was originally called "Head of the Family". Rob Petrie was a comedy writer and the plots were often centered around the life of Carl Reiner, who was one of the actual writers of the show, along with Bill Persky and Sam Denoff. Persky and Denoff also wrote "That Girl" (1966-1971) with Marlo Thomas; it was the first major sitcom to feature a single woman as the lead. Difficulty: Hard.

The pilot for "Head of The Family", starring Carl Reiner, was not picked up by the networks. But when a producer friend of Reiner's made a personal plea to CBS, the network agreed to purchase it, provided that someone else was cast in the lead role. Johnny Carson was briefly considered for the role of "Rob Petrie", but, of course, the role ultimately went to Dick Van Dyke, who lent the show his name. Difficulty: Hard.

The incorrect addresses include Morning Glory Circle from "Bewitched", Oak Hills Drive from "Who's the Boss?" and, of course, Evergreen Terrace, home to "The Simpsons". Difficulty: Hard.

According to Carl Reiner, MTM lost out on the role of Danny Thomas' daughter because neither he nor anyone else involved thought that a girl with such a small nose could realistically play the offspring of someone whose probiscus was as large as Mr. Thomas'. But Mr. Thomas got his revenge a few years later when he made a guest appearance on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," playing an alien version of himself in a dream that Rob has after watching a late night TV show called "Twilo." Mary Tyler Moore was twenty-three when she was cast as Laura Petrie. Dick Van Dyke was in his late thirties. He was concerned that the audience would think that they looked out of place together. Mel was the producer of the "Alan Brady Show". Many thought he was given this position because he was related to Alan Brady. Difficulty: Average.

Carl Reiner was one of the writers for "The Dick Van Dyke Show", but he also played Rob's egotistical boss, Alan Brady. As you may know, Carl is Rob Reiner's father. I wonder if Carl Reiner named Rob Petrie after his own son (born in 1948)? Carl Reiner has been an entertainer for almost 70 years, helping to form the comedy of early television. He was with Sid Caesar on "Your Show of Shows" in the 1950s; he did a wonderful routine with Mel Brooks called the "2000 Year Old Man" in the 1960s, and could be found acting in movies like "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming". He has won a Grammy and nine Emmy Awards. Difficulty: Easy.
