1. St Bernard

The St Bernard is a large breed of dog with adult dogs being as large as 35 inches in height and weighing up to 180lb. The breed is famous in recent times due to the 'Beethoven' movies which feature a St Bernard as the titular character. The breed was developed by monks at a hospice on the Great St Bernard Pass in the Alps mountain range and was originally used as a search and rescue dog to help travellers who were lost in the mountains.
2. Giant Schnauzer

The giant schnauzer is a breed of dog that was first developed in Germany during the 1600s. The breed was originally used as a farm dog for herding and guarding property but they later were used as guard dogs in urban settings and were used by the German military in the two world wars.

In more recent times they have been used as police dogs especially in Germany. The giant schnauzer is a large dog which can grow up to 27.5 inches tall and weigh up to 106lb.
3. Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan mastiff is a large breed of dog originating in the region of Tibet in Asia. The name of Tibetan mastiff was given to the dog by Europeans, who named it after the large European breeds of that name. The breed is actually closer to many mountain dogs than to mastiff breeds.

The breed was developed to guard livestock from predators in the Tibetan mountains. To cope with the harsh conditions they have a long double coat to help keep them warm.
4. Great Dane

Despite its name, the great Dane is not actually from Denmark; instead the breed originated in Germany. The dog was originally known as the 'German Dogge' or 'German Mastiff' but as relations with Germany soured in the early 20th century the name was changed to Great Dane after the French name for the breed of 'Grand Danois', in Germany the breed is often still called a 'Deutsche Dogge'.

The modern great Dane was developed from hunting dogs which were used to hunt for wild boar and deer during the middle ages.

It is a very large breed of dog growing up to 35 inches tall and weighing up to 180lb.
5. Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese water dog is a breed of dog originally developed by Portuguese sailors to assist fishermen. The dogs were used by fishermen for a number of purposes including retrieving nets and tackle and acting as messengers by swimming between boats.

The breed has a curly, non-shedding, coat and webbed feet which help it to swim better. US President Barack Obama owned two Portuguese water dogs, called Bo and Sunny, during his time in the White House.
6. Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan malamute is a breed of dog thought to have been bred originally by the Malimiut Inupiaq people in Alaska. They were bred to pull heavy sleds and were also used for hunting. The breed is large and powerful, growing up to 25 inches tall and weighing up to 84lb. They have a thick double coat designed to help them cope with the harsh Arctic conditions.
7. Boxer

The boxer is a mastiff style dog originally bred in Germany. Boxers were originally bred as hunting dogs but, during World War I, the breed was used for military purposes as a guard and attack dog as well as for carrying messages. They are medium to large dogs growing up to 25 inches tall and weighing up to 70 lb.
8. Hovawart

The hovawart is a breed of dog from Germany with a name meaning 'farm-watcher' reflecting their original primary role as a guard dog on farms. There are records of the breed dating back to the Middle Ages but, by the early 20th century, the breed had almost died out as other breeds such as German shepherds became more popular.

The breed was saved due to breeding efforts by Kurt Konig and was recognised by the German Kennel Club in 1936.
9. Newfoundland

The Newfoundland is a large dog breed originally developed to assist fishermen in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. The breed is a very strong, powerful swimmer with large webbed paws to help it propel itself through the water and a thick oily, waterproof coat to keep it warm in the cold waters of the Atlantic. Because of their swimming ability, Newfoundlands are sometimes used to assist lifeguards with rescuing people from water.
10. Rottweiler

The rottweiler is a breed of dog originating in Germany. The breed was originally used to herd livestock and pull carts however as the need for droving dogs declined due to the increasing use of railways to transport livestock the breed took on a new role as a guard dog and police dog.

The name rottweiler is derived from the German town of Rottweil where the breed was originally developed.
