I'm Seeing Red Again! Trivia Quiz
Animals come in all different colors, which typically helps them to survive in their habitat by making them blend in with their surroundings, warning predators to stay away, or attracting mates. These, as the title indicates, share a color.
Typically called red birds, the Northern cardinal male is a much brighter red than the brownish-red female. Their color is believed to be used to attract mates and draw attention away from the nest when predators are around. They eat food like seeds that contain yellow carotenoids, and their body turns the pigments from yellow into red.
Did you know that the kiwi is the only wingless bird?
2. Scarlet Macaw
Answer: Bird
Scarlet macaws are not exclusively red; they also have yellow and blue feathers, but their breast and head are mostly red. The national bird of Honduras, scarlet macaws live in large flocks. If they are ever approached by a predator, they fly away together; their color makes it very difficult to distinguish between the wing and the body of the bird. In science this is called disruptive coloration.
Did you know that birds have hollow bones? This allows them to fly.
3. Summer Tanager
Answer: Bird
Classified within the cardinal family, summer tanagers are red colored songbirds. While the males are red in color, the females are orangish with wings that are an olive-brown hue. The males, that attract mates with their color and songs, are the only bird in North America that is completely red as an adult.
Did you know there are about 10,000 species of birds?
4. Scarlet Ibis
Answer: Bird
Both the male and female ibis are completely red by the time they are adults. Even their bills and feet are red! The color comes from the carotene in the crustaceans they eat. It's the only shorebird in the world that is red.
Birds do not have teeth. They have an organ called the gizzard which helps them to grind up their food.
5. Red Panda
Answer: Mammal
There are two subspecies of red panda - the Himalayan and the Chinese red panda. It is NOT a bear, although it does have the same bone structure as the giant panda in its paw; both animals use a false thumb to eat bamboo. It is most closely related to raccoons, skunks, and weasels. Scientists believe that its red coloration helps to serve as camouflage, as it tends to live in areas that have red moss.
Mammals can be hairy or furry and have big brains.
6. Red Fox
Answer: Mammal
The red fox is the largest of the foxes and lives all over the world. Their red coats are used as camouflage. Most of its predators are green-red color blind, so even if it lives in a forest or grassland, it appears to be the same color as everything else! But while the majority of red foxes are reddish-orange, they come in a variety of colors.
The smallest mammal in the world is the bumblebee bat that lives in Thailand and Myanmar. Bats are the only mammals that can fly.
7. Colombian Red Howler
Answer: Mammal
The loudest animals in the New World, both male and female Colombian red howler monkeys are the same shade of red, however, that shade changes as they grow older. As with the red fox, the color is used as camouflage to aid in defense against predators. Interestingly, however, red howler monkeys can see in color, and this helps them choose red fruit, which is typically riper than green.
Scientists believe there are 5,000-6,000 different species of mammal on earth.
8. Dhole
Answer: Mammal
Also called a red dog, a whistling dog, or an Indian wild dog, the dhole's fur varies in color, depending on where it lives. Like African wild dogs, dholes typically hunt in packs. Scientists believe that members of the pack identify each other by the color and marks on their coats.
The blue whale is the largest mammal.
9. Seven Spot Ladybug
Answer: Insect
It's great to have ladybugs in one's garden; they are helpful in getting rid of some of the pests. But be careful and try not to handle them. They not only pinch, they also bite, and some people can be allergic to their toxin. In this case, the red color serves as a warning that lady bugs are NOT edible. The brighter the ladybug, the more toxic it is, with orange being the most toxic.
There are about 900,000 different species of inspects in the world today.
10. Red Velvet Ant
Answer: Insect
The female red velvet ants appear to be a bit fuzzy; that is how they got their name. The male looks like the female, but it also has black wings. They are not ants at all - they are wasps! In this case, their redness is an aposematic signal, that is, it tells potential predators to leave them alone. If something is really bothering them, they secrete a bad smelling chemical, and if something is really really bothering them, the females have a stinger.
Did you know that ants outnumber all other creatures on earth? There are an estimated 1 quadrillion ants in the world today.
