Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I MAC PUS CARE
Answer: Yachting
I MAC PUS CARE = America's Cup
With its origins in an 1851 sailing race around the Isle of Wight, UK, the America's Cup is described on its official website as the oldest sporting trophy in the world. The winner of the first race was a yacht named America, and the name of the cup is taken from that vessel. Challenges are periodically made for the cup, and the New York Yacht Club was successful in defending their prize the first 24 times, until 1983, when Australia II from the Perth Yacht Club was victorious. Since that time, yachts from various countries have been successful, both in defense and as challengers.
2. PORT CRY HOME SINS MISO
Answer: Baseball
PORT CRY HOME SINS MISO = Commissioner's Trophy
The Commissioner's Trophy is that rather delicate looking award that is brought out onto the field to be given to the winners of Major League Baseball's Fall Classic (aka the World Series). A new trophy is created each season, and most often takes the form of a circle of flag poles with the banners of each team represented. The first such trophy was presented in 1967, but the name only dates from 1985.
Oh, for those who wonder, MISO is a paste made from soybeans used as a seasoning in Japanese cookery.
3. VISA UP CD
Answer: Tennis
VISA UP CD = Davis Cup
Although the term Davis Cup has come to refer to the entire annual international men's tennis tournament, there is a rather lovely trophy that bears the name. The format of the team competition has gone through an number of changes since the first one in 1900, which was a straight challenge between Great Britain and the United States. Perhaps Dwight Davis, the founder, would have been surprised to hear of Canada taking the title (for the first time) 122 years later.
4. DOLLS GONE VEG
Answer: Boxing
DOLLS GONE VEG = Golden Gloves
The term Golden Gloves refers to an annual amateur boxing tournament in the USA which has existed since 1928, and which awards not gloves, of any sort, but a belt and/or a ring to the winners. Similarly named programs exist in many other countries around the world.
This should not be confused with Major League Baseball's Gold Glove Awards, which are presented annually for excellence in fielding at every position, in both leagues.
5. CURE GYP
Answer: Canadian Football
CURE GYP = Grey Cup
The Canadian Football League's championship trophy, the Grey Cup is actually nearly half a century older than the CFL (founded 1958 by merger of existing leagues), having been donated by then Governor General the Earl Grey in 1909. It was originally intended as an amateur ice hockey award, but became, first, an amateur rugby football award and the first winners were the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. In later years, the Grey Cup game has been played between the champions of the Eastern and Western divisions of the CFL, in a predetermined location.
6. SURE TRY MIL JET HOP
Answer: Football/Soccer
SURE TRY MIL JET HOP = Jules Rimet Trophy
Named for FIFA's third president, the Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded to the winning team of FIFA's World Cup between 1930 and 1970, when Brazil won it for the third time and was allowed to keep it permanently, as Rimet himself had decreed in 1930. It was stolen from its place of exhibition in 1983, and never recovered.
A new trophy was designed and crafted for the next (1974) World Cup, and named the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
7. CURRY PED
Answer: Golf
CURRY PED = Ryder Cup
Since 1927, when an Englishman named Samuel Ryder donated the trophy, teams of golfers from the USA have taken on teams from the other side of the Atlantic every two years for the honour of being Ryder Cup champions. Initially their opponents were from Great Britain only, but since 1979 continental European golfers have been included.
Note: "Ped" is a Scrabble-legal word meaning (amongst other things) a basket or hamper.
8. ELY PUTS CAN
Answer: Hockey (Ice)
ELY PUTS CAN = Stanley Cup
Named after the then Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, who donated it, the Stanley Cup was first awarded in 1893, at which time it was an amateur award. It later came to be the championship award for the winners of the National Hockey League playoffs and a much sought-after prize amongst both hockey players and fans. Originally a bowl, the Cup has grown over the years as rings have been added, engraved with the names of players and others associated with the winning teams. (There are in fact different versions of the Cup.)
In case you wondered, Ely is a place in England (and a couple of US states) and also a surname.
9. WITS CON PUN
Answer: NASCAR
WITS CON PUN = Winston Cup
The trophies for Winston Cup Series winners were large and imposing, if images online are to be believed. What is known as the Winston Cup Series Era spanned the years 1971-2003, and produced fifteen different champions, including such well-known drivers as Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon. Since 2003 the main NASCAR series has been known by a number of names, including, simply, NASCAR Cup Series.
NASCAR = National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing
10. RYE JELLY WOES
Answer: Cycling
RYE JELLY WOES = Yellow Jersey
The yellow jersey, or maillot jaune, is specifically associated with cycling's Tour de France, and is awarded to the rider who leads the "general classification", which means the rider who has taken the shortest accumulated time to complete the race. It is awarded at the end of each stage to this rider, who has the right to wear it during the following stage (and, indeed, until another rider outdoes him).
The Tour is probably the most well-known of all the cycling stage races, and is an annual event, being run over the course of 23 days, usually in July, beginning with the first Tour in 1903, with gaps for each of the World Wars.
