2. Jackson

The seventh US president, Andrew Jackson, (1767-1845) gained early recognition as a general in the American Army, before running for president in 1824. Although defeated, he ran again in 1828 and was successful, being re-elected in 1832.
3. Arthur

The Republican politician Chester Arthur (1829-86) was serving as vice-president under James Garfield when Garfield was fatally shot by Charles Guiteau in July 1881. Arthur succeeded him automatically, becoming the 21st president. He did not seek re-election and retired at the end of his first term of office in 1885.
