The Animal Kingdom At First Glance Quiz
What looks like a bunch of animals is indeed, four distinct groups. At first, it may look like some animals belong to more than one group but not if you are careful and take deliberate care you will figure it out.
Aquila adalberti is known also as the Spanish imperial eagle, Iberian imperial eagle and Adalbert's eagle. It is named after a Bavarian prince but is only found on the Iberian peninsula and even then, rarely in Portugal. In the 1960s, it was critically endangered but due to conservation efforts, its status was changed to 'Vulnerable' in 2012.
It is 78-80 cm (31-32 inches)in length, with a 180 - 208cm (71-82 inch) wingspan making it one of Europe's largest birds.
2. Rock partridge

Rock partridges are found in semi-arid zones in the Balkan peninsula and Italy. They breed in dry, open, hilly areas. They eat insects and seeds. They are closely related to the red-legged partridge but are distinguished because the rock partridge has a well-defined black gorget (burst of colour around the throat).
3. Corsican nuthatch

The Corsican nuthatch (Sitta Whiteheadi) is endemic to Corsica and even then it is limited to woods of Corsican pine, which grow at altitudes of 800-1600m (2,600 to 5,200 feet).
Males are 10 cm (4 in.) long, females smaller, and they usually nest in holes in dead trees. They feed on seeds and small insects.
4. Parrot crossbill

Loxia pytyopsittacus is the scientific name for the parrot crossbill found only in northwestern Europe and Eastern Russian pine forests. This bird is 17-19cm (6.5 to 7.1 inches) long with a larger wingspan of 26-30 cm (11-12 inches) wingspan. Males are usually red or orange, while females are green to yellow.
It is often confused with the red and Scottish crossbills but their habitats are discrete.
5. Marmora's warbler

Marmora's warbler (Sylvia sarda) is named after Italian naturalist Alberto della Marmora. They are found on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, rarely spotted on the European mainland. They look different to most birds, with longish tails, big heads, red colouration around the head and legs, with grey bodies. They nest in thorny bushes and eat insects.
6. Boomslang

Boomslang, Dispholidus typus, is also known as the common African tree snake and Kivu large green tree snake. The name in Afrikaans means 'tree snake'. Adults vary between 100-160 cm (39-63 in) in length. A key feature is the large round eyes. Colouration is variable, which permits the boomslang to camouflage according to the terrain. Found in most places in sub-Saharan Africa it is venomous and rear-fanged Therefore it injects small amounts of venom in but with fast, repeated bites.
7. Black mamba

Black mambas, Dendroaspis polylepis, are 200-450 cm (79-177 in) long with colouring which is usually brown, olive green, or yellow. The black refers to the inside of its mouth which is unusual as it is pitch black. However, if you see the black, you are in trouble as it is about to strike and its venom is one of the most deadly in the snake world. Once bitten, unless immediate medical intervention is received, that bite will be fatal.
8. Sand boa

The sand boa, Eryx jaculus is also known as the javelin sand boa. A distinguishing feature is that the head is contiguous with the body, there is no distinction between head and body. A shortish snake that can only reach 80 cm (31 in). Poorly named, they are not found in sandy areas but in savanna-like areas with soil or rocky slopes.
They are nocturnal and do not bask in the sunlight but instead get warm by basking under fallen leaves. Found in north coastal Africa, they were thought to originate in Greece. During naval battles involving ancient Greeks, they were shot into their enemies.
As they gained new territories the habitat of sand boas increased!
9. Common slug eater

Common slug eater, Duberria lutrix, is a short (40 cm /16 in) non-venomous snake. Multi-coloured, they are black-striped on a green or brown back, grey sides and pale white to yellow bellies. Endemic to southern Africa, they feed on a specialised diet of slugs and snails. They are known to bash a hard snail shell against rocks to break it open.
10. Puff adder

Puff adders, Bitis arietans, are aggressive and dangerous; it is not afraid to roam into urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Its name comes from its ability to inflate itself before it strikes. It hisses first then usually follows with a swift strike. Their venom is potent but not always fatal.
Adults are 100-150 cm (39-59 in) in length. Colouration is variable from grey to mid-brown, with yellow chevrons dorsally, they use their colouration effectively as camouflage.
11. Taipans

The Cairns Taipans were founded in 1999 and entered the National Basketball League, being one of the few non-capital city teams. They play their home games at the Cairns Convention Centre, known colloquially as "The Snakepit". Taipans are highly venomous snakes, endemic to Australia common in the Cairns region.
12. Kangaroos

The Kangaroos is the nickname of the Australia national rugby league team. They were given the name by the British Press when they arrived in Great Britain for their inaugural tour in 1908 with a kangaroo in tow as a pet and mascot. The name stuck. When the team won their 12th World Cup (from 15 contested) in 2021, the Kangaroos had been consistently at the top of world rankings since 1958.
The Kangaroos is also the nickname of the North Melbourne Australian Football League team.
13. Magpies

The nickname of the Collingwood Football Club is the Magpies. The team is a professional Australian Rules football club playing out of Melbourne, Victoria and competes in the Australian Football League. When it won its 16th Grand final in 2023 it had won 16 in total, drawn two and lost 27.
In 2023, its supporter membership of 106,470 members was the highest of any team in any football code in Australia.
14. Swans
