Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A New Day
Answer: Singers
Celine Dion's "A New Day" residency at Caesars Palace is said to be the one that renewed interest in Las Vegas shows among younger performers. Before it opened in 2003, many of the singers who were given residencies on The Strip were aiming at older audiences but Dion, who was still achieving significant chart success around the world at the time, delivered a different kind of audience.
Despite not getting great reviews at the start of her run, the show broke box office records for Vegas and ran for more than four years.
2. Up Close & Personal
Answer: Singers
The singer Wayne Newton first performed in Las Vegas as a 15-year-old in 1958 and continued to perform on-and-off for more than fifty years. "Up Close & Personal" was his 2016 show at Bally's Hotel. It acted as a retrospective of his career, including a selection from his huge repetoire of songs, some instrumental performances and video highlights of his time in Vegas.
3. The Red Piano
Answer: Singers
"The Red Piano" was Elton John's first residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace from 2004 to 2009. He performed nearly 250 shows in this residency playing a range of hits from his more than thirty years in the business. Two years after the show ended, John returned to The Colosseum with "The Million Dollar Piano", a residency that would last until 2018.
4. Piece of Me
Answer: Singers
"Britney: Piece of Me" was the first Vegas residency show by Britney Spears. The show started at Planet Hollywood in 2013 and ran for four years. Initially the show was not a retrospective like so many Vegas residencies but concentrated on new material.
However, halfway through the run, as Britney signed on for two more years in residency, the show was re-worked to include many of her worldwide hits from earlier in her career.
5. Siegfried & Roy
Answer: Magic Show
Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn's first came to Las Vegas to perform a magic show in 1967. By 1990 they were headlining their own show at the Mirage resort. 6. Penn and Teller
Answer: Magic Show
Penn and Teller's comedic magic show first came to Vegas at Bally's in 1993. They moved on to the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand before finding a new home at the Rio in 2001. Their show is notable for the way that the commentary that they provide on stage will often explain how the trick is performed, introducing a healthy dose of skepticism about the methods that illusionists use, all the while pulling off the tricks with astonishing sleight of hand.
7. Shin Lim: Limitless
Answer: Magic Show
Shin Lim came to public attention through his magic performances on "America's Got Talent", a competition he won in 2018. He followed this up by winning "America's Got Talent: The Champions" a year later. Part of his prize for winning the show was a headline slot at Paris Las Vegas Hotel, which was soon followed by a residency at the Mirage hotel in 2019.
8. The Mentalist

One fan in attendance at those shows was a certain Rob Garrett.
10. The Rat Pack Is Back
Answer: Impersonator/Tribute Show
Though they never called themselves The Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra was known to hate the phrase) it is the one that has stuck to the group of entertainers that included Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin and Peter Lawford among others. They were regular performers in what they called "The Summit at The Sands" at the Copa Room in the Sands Hotel in the early '60s when they were filming the original "Ocean's 11" (1960) in the city.
For those too young to have seen the legends in their pomp, "The Rat Pack Is Back" was devised with Sinatra, Martin and Davis Jr impersonators singing classic songs of the period. It began its run in 2001 at the Tuscany Suites, which created its own "Copa Room" for it to be shown in (the original having been demolished when The Sands Hotel and Casino was imploded in 1996).
11. Purple Reign
Answer: Impersonator/Tribute Show
"Purple Reign" is the Las Vegas show of Prince impersonator, Jason Tenner. Initially the act was booked to play live various Vegas hotels and bars before becoming a show in its own right, being held at various venues before becoming resident at the Tropicana Hotel in 2017.

Billy Joel never had a residency in Las Vegas but did provide two tracks for the soundtrack to the movie, "Honeymoon in Vegas" (1992).
