Soon Heidi is loved by her grandfather. Shirley Temple played the role of Heidi in the 1937 movie. In Switzerland there is a town named after the Heidi books, called Heidiland.

Frank Baum framed the pencil he used to write "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". Dorothy Gale is based on L. Frank's niece Dorothy Gage who died in 1898.

The Christmas special was nominated for five Daytime Emmy Awards and won two.
